A Change of Heart Review

Producer: Nelson Cheung
Genre: Modern, suspense
Cast: Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Joey Meng, Niki Chow, Vincent Wong, Mandy Wong, Elaine Yiu

Plot:
A ruthless businessman has A Change of Heart after heart surgery, which greatly displeases his wife, who then has an affair with her subordinate, all the while suspecting her husband of an affair with the girlfriend of the heart donor who was also his doctor and whom has a twin brother that the girlfriend uses to get close to the businessman so she can investigate her mother's murder, which makes the wife so jealous that she goes to extreme lengths to get revenge, yet he remains true to her, except it was too late when she found out because she's done too many bad deeds and in the TVB world that means you must die no matter what because otherwise there will be complaints pouring in from lots of people with nothing better to do and we wouldn't want that now, would we?

Review:
A Change of Heart is one of the better series so far this year. Then again, that’s not saying much… To start off, this series boosts an attractive cast. The premise is interesting enough. The storyline itself progressed well and is intriguing with overlapping mysteries and curveballs. Even the most unsuspicious characters get embroiled as the mystery unfolds. The ending had some ingenuity, but was rushed as usual. Obviously, the script was far from perfect, but at least we can appreciate that it wasn’t a straight ride from start to finish.

Joey Meng was hands-down my favourite character. Ever since Consort Yu (Sheren Tang) of the original War and Beauty, I’ve been waiting for a character that would be equally as brilliant, manipulative and scheming. Joey is just that – chilling and evil to the core. She stops at nothing to get what she wants and never feels a tinge of remorse. This is my first time watching Joey and I can see why she’s such a highly-touted actress. She has great acting skills to go with her impressive looks.

Mandy Wong is quickly becoming one of my favourite actresses with her spectacular performances. Not for the first time, she is able to pull off a loud-spoken, selfish character without coming across as annoying. Maybe that's the reason she keeps getting these roles, because she is so excellent at that. She is completely immersed into her character and outshone the female lead, Niki, who was stagnant.

Niki's character has a very emotional past, but Niki remained emotionless and distant throughout. At most, she just seemed to be moody. Her character can be unreasonable and too quick to jump to conclusions, which is not exactly a desirable trait for a police officer. Ironically, her best scene was not as herself, but as Joey acting as her in the confrontation with Michael. In that scene, I could really imagine Joey’s character being inside Niki's body.

The men paled in comparison to the ladies. Bosco Wong plays twins brothers who supposedly differ widely in personality, but he is one and the same for both roles. At times, I was confused as to which person he was. Still, he is charismatic and shares good chemistry with Niki. Michael Miu was entertaining as a super-egoistic businessman, but he lost that appeal after his surgery. I guess I just don’t like watching nice guys. His wife had every reason to be frustrated at him. His altruistic admission of his crime was, frankly, dumb.

Vincent Wong and Elaine Yiu’s pairing was nothing to fawn over, nor were either characters vitally important for the story. But Vincent as a dorky detective wanna-be had his funny moments. He actually reminds me of an old classmate who speaks in the same manner. Benjamin Yuen was criticized in The Voice of Stars as being expressionless, and rightly so, because he’s just as wooden in here. The pair of Benjamin and JJ Jia never radiated that blissfulness as a couple, so it didn't matter much when their marriage fell apart.

My suggested alternative ending: Joey as Niki should do more sinister things to frame the real Niki...

Rating: 4/5

"A Change of Heart" Theme Song

The theme song is called "Heart Change" (心變), by Niki Chow.

The sub-theme song is sung by Bosco Wong, called "Final Blessing" (最後祝福)

An ode to Myolie? (Bosco says it isn't)

Overview - A Change of Heart

Business mogul Michael Miu does not hesitate to use ruthless tactics when pursuing his money-making ideas. Unfortunately, he suffers from a serious heart disease and can only survive with a heart transplant. Coincidentally, his doctor, Bosco Wong, dies in an accident and has a suitable heart for Michael. After the surgery, Michael has a huge personality change, becoming friendly and casual, just like how Bosco used to be. His resemblance to Bosco leaves his wife (Joey Meng) and Bosco's fiance (Niki Chow) in a confused state. The relationship between the three people begin to change.

Bosco's twin brother (also played by Bosco) returns to Hong Kong and meets the people that had been in his brother's life. He finds that he is developing feelings for Niki, but also gets involved with "PR lady" Mandy Wong. Meanwhile, Michael invites Bosco to work in his company. With Michael's backing, Bosco quickly rises through the corporate ranks. Bosco see Michael as a mentor and treats him like a family member, until he discovers his brother's death wasn't an accident...

TVB Sales Presentation Filming

Updated October 20, 2012 with more new dramas.

With all the talk about TVB Anniversary Awards, it also means another thing is coming up. If you guessed the annual TVB Sales Presentation, you're correct!

Each year, TVB hosts a show for advertising clients. It is a chance to showcase all the exciting new programmes that is in store for the upcoming year (so, you know, advertisers can pour more money in TVB's bank account). This year's event will be held on November 8 (which no one needs to care about except for the lucky people attending). The important date to be circled on fans' calenders is November 24, when the programme will be aired.

Currently, all the siu-sang and fadans are busy sucking up to senior executives for awards filming for sales presentation clips. Here's a glimspe of what is in store for 2013:

Rosy Business 3 - Out with Sheren Tang and Pierre Ngo. In with Myolie Wu and Edwin Siu. Wayne Lai stays. Lee Tim-sing stays (with TVB).

Myolie and Wayne are spies. Edwin is the villian. The story takes place in 1920-30s China.

The Hippocratic Crush 2 - The original cast will remain intact with Lawrence Ng joining them. Here's hoping everyone remembers how to be a doctor and not just be involved in an endless love triangle (ahem, Ghetto Justice 2).

Three Lifetimes of Fate - Bobby Au-yeung and Esther Kwan continues their fate - for three lifetimes and a thousand years this time. Let's call it Maiden's Vow 2.

Bobby will be Justice Bao (ancient), detective (pre-modern) and police officer (modern). Esther will portray a talented lady (ancient), triad leader (pre-modern) and talk show host (modern). Ben Wong will obviously get the bad guy role.

Eat For Slave - Raymond Lam and Ron Ng reunite for fans of the RR bromance. The female cast will consist of Fala Chen, Sharon Chan and Nancy Wu.

The story takes place in the Qing Dynasty. Raymond will be an Emperor. Fala and Nancy are fighters. Sharon Chan might be a concubine the looks of her costume. I'm guessing Ron Ng will be the fatty that will make the series live up to its name?

Good Heart Goes Haywire - Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Niki Chow, Vincent Wong, Joey Meng, Mandy Wong.

See location filming for this series here.

Sniper Attack 2013 - Laughing Gor returns? Not quite. But Michael Tse will be a cop once again, this time paired with (soon-to-be TV Queen?) Kate Tsui. No undercover work this time (probably). They will be members of the SDU aka Flying Tigers. Well, TVB did promise a Tiger Cubs 2, didn't they?

Office of Spreading Love - The historic collaboration between the TV Kings Wayne Lai and Moses Chan! Not really. People seem to forget that they were both in The Gentle Crackdown (even Moses himself, who said "I've always wanted to work with Wayne. I finally get my wish.")

It is the first time for both Wayne and Moses to portray lawyers. They will battle things out in court over inheritance cases. Fala Chen, Evergreen Mak and Samantha Ko are also part of the cast.

Big Wheel - Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu are long-lost brothers living in Hong Kong and Macau, respectively. What happens when they meet again? In TVB world, there's only one answer: fight over Linda Chung. The story spans 30 years from 1980s to the present.

Cold Mountain Hidden Dragon - Will feature Raymond Wong, Kenneth Ma and Kenny Wong in weird costumes. Female leads are Aimee Chan and former ATV actress Priscilla Wong.

Unrequited Love in Twin Cities - Aimee Chan, Lin Xia Wei (Raymond Lam's cousin) and Tony Hung in a modern drama. The crew travelled to Malaysia for filming, making this the first sales presentation clip that is filmed outside of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Adventures

A little overdue, but here's the post about my time in Hong Kong!

A Good Heart Goes Haywire Location Filming

I stumbled upon another TVB filming session. I couldn't get the name of the drama from any of the production people, but I suspect they were shooting for A Good Heart Goes Haywire since the actors I saw are all in that series.

There was no dialogue throughout the scene. From my guesstimation, Jack Wu and Benz Hui are following/spying on the light blue shirt guy (any help here?), who was walking two dogs. This would make sense since Benz plays a police officer in the series.

Also saw Sammy Shum in the TVB van, but couldn't snap a picture of him.

Opening Day of Racing Season

I was at the opening day of the racing season when I spotted Eric Tsang at the race course. He and Nat Chan are well-known horse-owners in the entertainment industry. Eric's horse finished first in one of the races, so he was taking pictures with the horse and jockey at the podium. Only managed to get picture of him in the crowd. Can you spot him? Divas in Distress Promotional Event

I was shopping and what do you know? There was a promotional event for Divas in Distress at that mall! Most of the cast was there, minus Gigi Wong, who apparently was in Canada at that time. The event started with the child actor "Michel" playing the piano along with someone singing the theme song. Then all the actors came out for games. The first game was to decorate a lantern (in anticipation of the Mid-Autumn Festival), with Liza Wang being the judge. Him and Mandy's team won.

For the second game, each of the couples were called up: Him/Mandy, Chin Ka Lok/Eliza, So Gei/Lo Lo. The ladies had to throw balls at the guys who were holding big pink hearts. The objective is to get as many of the balls to stick on the heart as possible. Him and Mandy won again. They seem to have so much chemistry even when playing games.

The final segment featured a performance of the English songs used in the drama. Him and Mandy did a little dance during their song.
