Wayne Lai and Pierre Ngo - A Love Story
There was a cute scene in episode 1 of Bullet Brain where Wayne Lai reaches over to hold Pierre Ngo's hand. For those wondering... yep, they really do love each other.
Their matchmaker? Lee Tim Sing, who saw qualities in both of them and decided to cast them together in several of his dramas.
Their love story
Unbeknownst to them, Wayne and Pierre's fate actually started in The Conqueror's Story, though they never shared a scene. Pierre was a young puppet ruler of the Chu state while Wayne defected to the Han state.
They had a brief encounter in Fantasy Hotel when they worked for the same travel agency. Wayne was a tour guide, while Pierre was just an unnamed worker in the office.
They finally met in Rosy Business but like most TVB love stories, they started off as enemies. Pierre was the eldest son of a rich merchant and he did not like Wayne, who was a lowly worker in the family business. Pierre tries to get rid of Wayne in many ways, including hiring someone to kill him. Luckily, Wayne survives.
Wayne doesn't hold it against Pierre and even saves his life in No Regrets. They become good buddies and help each other through the thick and thin of the war. Pierre willingly commits murder to prevent Wayne from doing so. Wayne makes an impassionate speech on the streets to free Pierre. Unfortunately, this happy couple is separated by a sudden bombing.
It turns out Pierre was kidnapped by a foreign state, causing Wayne to be banished (King Maker). Wayne rescues Pierre once again and they return to the imperial court. Wayne pulls out all stops to secure the throne for Pierre. But apparently Pierre is so traumatized by his experience that he makes another murder attempt on Wayne, only to have his plans are foiled by Wayne. In the end, Pierre realizes his dependence on Wayne and they rule the country together.
They finally get together in Bullet Brain. Although Pierre is shy to admit their relationship, the couple lovingly hold hands on the streets.
Their newfound romance will be tested as they fight to be known as the best detective. Here's hoping their love is strong enough to overcome the challenges...

TVB Sales Presentation Filming
Updated October 20, 2012 with more new dramas.
With all the talk about TVB Anniversary Awards, it also means another thing is coming up. If you guessed the annual TVB Sales Presentation, you're correct!
Each year, TVB hosts a show for advertising clients. It is a chance to showcase all the exciting new programmes that is in store for the upcoming year (so, you know, advertisers can pour more money in TVB's bank account). This year's event will be held on November 8 (which no one needs to care about except for the lucky people attending). The important date to be circled on fans' calenders is November 24, when the programme will be aired.
Currently, all the siu-sang and fadans are busysucking up to senior executives for awards filming for sales presentation clips. Here's a glimspe of what is in store for 2013:
Rosy Business 3 - Out with Sheren Tang and Pierre Ngo. In with Myolie Wu and Edwin Siu. Wayne Lai stays. Lee Tim-sing stays (with TVB).
Myolie and Wayne are spies. Edwin is the villian. The story takes place in 1920-30s China.
The Hippocratic Crush 2 - The original cast will remain intact with Lawrence Ng joining them. Here's hoping everyone remembers how to be a doctor and not just be involved in an endless love triangle (ahem, Ghetto Justice 2).
Three Lifetimes of Fate - Bobby Au-yeung and Esther Kwan continues their fate - for three lifetimes and a thousand years this time. Let's call it Maiden's Vow 2.
Bobby will be Justice Bao (ancient), detective (pre-modern) and police officer (modern). Esther will portray a talented lady (ancient), triad leader (pre-modern) and talk show host (modern). Ben Wong will obviously get the bad guy role.
Eat For Slave - Raymond Lam and Ron Ng reunite for fans of the RR bromance. The female cast will consist of Fala Chen, Sharon Chan and Nancy Wu.
The story takes place in the Qing Dynasty. Raymond will be an Emperor. Fala and Nancy are fighters. Sharon Chan might be a concubine the looks of her costume. I'm guessing Ron Ng will be the fatty that will make the series live up to its name?
Good Heart Goes Haywire - Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Niki Chow, Vincent Wong, Joey Meng, Mandy Wong.

Sniper Attack 2013 - Laughing Gor returns? Not quite. But Michael Tse will be a cop once again, this time paired with (soon-to-be TV Queen?) Kate Tsui. No undercover work this time (probably). They will be members of the SDU aka Flying Tigers. Well, TVB did promise a Tiger Cubs 2, didn't they?
Office of Spreading Love - The historic collaboration between the TV Kings Wayne Lai and Moses Chan! Not really. People seem to forget that they were both in The Gentle Crackdown (even Moses himself, who said "I've always wanted to work with Wayne. I finally get my wish.")
It is the first time for both Wayne and Moses to portray lawyers. They will battle things out in court over inheritance cases. Fala Chen, Evergreen Mak and Samantha Ko are also part of the cast.
Big Wheel - Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu are long-lost brothers living in Hong Kong and Macau, respectively. What happens when they meet again? In TVB world, there's only one answer: fight over Linda Chung. The story spans 30 years from 1980s to the present.
Cold Mountain Hidden Dragon - Will feature Raymond Wong, Kenneth Ma and Kenny Wong in weird costumes. Female leads are Aimee Chan and former ATV actress Priscilla Wong.
Unrequited Love in Twin Cities - Aimee Chan, Lin Xia Wei (Raymond Lam's cousin) and Tony Hung in a modern drama. The crew travelled to Malaysia for filming, making this the first sales presentation clip that is filmed outside of Hong Kong.

Sequelmania
Nowadays, TVB’s philosophy is basically: Turn anything and everything into a sequel. Big hit? Sequel. Decent ratings? Sequel. We have no idea what to make next? Sequel. So let’s review some of the better and worst sequels/spinoffs plus many upcoming ones.
Good
No Regrets – Still intense and great acting, except the boring Fala and Raymond story.
Forensic Heroes III – Tried for a different feel with all the high-tech stuff, though the cases were not all that special.
D.I.E. Again – Unique in that there are all sorts of weird happenings not seen in other detective series.
The Academy spinoffs – All of the dramas were very good, but they should really stop now. Can’t keep having people die and then come back alive again.
Bad
Burning Flames III – Firefighting made up like 10% of the series. Wong He is in a coma for half of it. Did anyone watch the originals when making this?
Can’t Buy Me Love – The rhyming lines were not funny after the first few times. Urgh…
Moonlight Resonance – Okay, a lot of people liked HOG and MR. I’m in the minority because I didn’t like the yelling, crying and slapping.
Just Love II – Almost completely irrelevant to the legal theme except for the title.
Undecided
A Pillow Case of Mystery II – Wasn't paying much attention when watching this. Akin to D.I.E. ancient version.
Witness Insecurity – A spinoff of Miss Koo from Yes Sir, Sorry Sir, featuring a lot of the same cast. If comparing to the original, it’s 10x better, but that’s not saying much at all.

Triumph in the Skies II – I hope it’s not like Burning Flames 3: Love, love, love, and oh yeah, the occasional flying a plane.
Beauty At War – TVB couldn’t match War & Beauty success in other palace dramas and this one does not look promising.
The Hippocratic Crush II – Didn’t watch the first one, so not sure. Great theme song though.
A Great Way to Care II – Didn’t watch this either, but makes it seem like people with mental illnesses will commit crimes.
A Chip Off the Block II – The first one was decent comedy except for Sunny Chan. Add Liza Wang, minus Sunny Chan = the second one should be okay.
Big Ifs…
Rosy Business III – Modern version with Wayne Lai and Michelle Yim (?) No doubts on the acting, but can the story be as good?
Gloves Come Off II – Isn’t there enough criticism to persuade TVB not to make a sequel? Not like the first one got very high ratings either (average about 30 points).
Sergeant Tabloid II – Really, are we getting a little ahead of ourselves? The original hasn’t even been aired in HK yet.

ATF Terror – If Tiger Cubs is any indicator, this will be good! Of course this doesn’t have the same million dollar budget and abundance of muscular men as Tiger Cubs, but it should still feature some awesome action scenes. Ruco Chan’s role as an undercover cop should propel him to higher heights since HK audiences seem to really love undercover cops.

Highs and Lows – Raymond Lam takes a departure from his handsome, gentleman characters. This time he’s a rugged cop, complete with the mustache. The sales presentation trailer featured an intriguing plot about bribery and betrayal. The cast is different from the sales presentation (save for Michael Miu and Kate Tsui), but I hope they kept the same storyline. This is the same producer as Tiger Cubs so I expect serious action stuff.

Justice Attack – Lawyer dramas always interest me for their cases and legal perspectives. Will this be funny like Ghetto Justice or more serious like The Other Truth? There’s bound to be comedic moments with Sammy Leung, Louis Yuen and Johnson Lee. According to Wikipedia, the character’s names make reference to HK celebrities and slang. I’m thinking this might lean towards Ghetto Justice-like. With Michael Tse in the leading role, this might be a crossover of Law Ba and Laughing Gor.
Sidenote: They are actually making a film featuring Law Ba x Laughing Gor.
Rosy Business 3 – This series has yet to be confirmed. But if it is given the green light, it will surely be a hit. It takes things into the modern business world. The cast will be Wayne Lai, possibly paired with Michelle Yim. I have a feeling it will depend on how well the pairing is received in The Confidant. But is it still Rosy Business without Sheren and Producer Lee Tim Shing?
Triumph in the Skies II – Are they ever going to film this series? The rumored storyline involves a whole tangle of relationships. Normally, I wouldn’t want to sort through all the mess, but I’ll probably watch this because of the cast and the fact that it’s such a major production. Plus the airplane scenes are pretty cool. But with Fala Chen in a leading role, I am going to keep my expectations low.

All-Time Favourite TVB Series
A Step into the Past – This was the drama that got me interested in Chinese history. I loved Louis Koo for his witty remarks and how he used his modern knowledge in the ancient era. Also, Raymond Lam was very good as Qin Shi Huangdi in his first major role. I could feel the power and authority coming from him as he developed into the cruel ruler of China. I’ve always wanted TVB to make a sequel and I got my wish with Three Kingdoms RPG!
War and Beauty – This series set the tone for all palace scheme dramas and nothing has been really comparable. The story is fast-paced (so much packed into 30 episodes!), there’s all sorts of evil schemes and everything was so unpredictable. From the first episode, I couldn’t stop watching. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, eager to see how the plots will turn out and how Sheren Tang’s Yue Fei always had the upper hand. A classic and a must watch!
Rosy Business – Chronicling the struggles of a poor peasant and a woman propelled to the leadership of the family business, this series is different from other family feud dramas. Exciting plot, quick pace. Every episode had its own climax. Wayne Lai and Sheren Tang lead a group of more-than-able actors. Great acting by the whole cast. I admire Wayne and Sheren’s relationship – mutual trust, mutual care, mutual understanding. Awesome through and through again!
Catch Me Now – A refreshing series that turned the tables. It was from the perspective of a group of thieves who steal from the rich and aid the poor. Damien Lau plays the leader of the thieves and he engages in a battle of wits with policeman Joe Ma. It was a brilliant showdown right to the final minute.
The Conqueror’s Story – A great telling of the legendary Chor-Han Battle. Adam Cheng’s portrayal of the carefree Lau Bong kept the drama light-hearted. Kwong Wa is always terrific as historic heroes; this time as Hong Yu was no different. The short intros at the beginning of each episode taught me a lot about that time period.
