Overview - Flying Tiger II

A mysterious organization is conducting criminal activity in Hong Kong, putting the city's safety at imminent risk. Under the orders of the Chief Executive, Special Duties Unit (SDU) leader Michael Miu forms a special task force with handpicked elite police officers. The members include operations leader Bosco Wong, investigation leader Ron Ng, intelligence officers Kenneth Ma and Jacky Cai, and Jennifer Yu from the Identification Bureau. After the establishment of the task force, they put all their efforts into eliminating criminal activity, while facing their own troubles with love and hate.

Overview - The Hiddens

In a certain major city in Asia, the mastermind of a crime organization has escaped from a high-security prison. Former intelligence director Lawrence Ng, who was imprisoned for murder, is taken as hostage in this incident and forced to escape prison with the mastermind.

Jessica Hsuan, who is responsible for apprehending the mastermind, has ordered her officers to shoot and kill all the prisoners who participated in the escape. Lawrence is alarmed to see that everyone has been killed. He is also shot at...

When Lawrence awakens, he finds himself at the security bureau's secret base. He had not been killed. Jessica's real goal was to arrange for Lawrence's disappearance from the world. Several countries in the region are faced with difficult and urgent problems. For reasons that cannot be disclosed, they have decided to establish an organization called "The Hiddens", led by Jessica, to carry out a series of missions.

Lawrence is a shrewd, intelligent, courageous team leader who is good at controlling his subordinates. Before he went to prison, he led special intelligence agents to complete many nearly impossible missions. After accepting the appointment from Jessica, Lawrence's first mission is to recruit six key members for the organization. The six people appear to have different occupations to hide their identity. In reality, they each have their own specialty.

The Hiddens will air on myTV Super starting September 22. 

Overview - Presumed Accidents

Lawrence Ng is an antiques dealer who is gentle, well-learned in Western and Chinese cultures and has a comfortable, care-free life. Since his late wife Selena Li passed away, he has been living a single lifestyle. Only his housekeeper Chow Chung knows everything about him. One day, Lawrence encounters insurance company investigator Sisley Choi at the hospital. It brings ripples into his quiet life. As Sisley investigates the accident that caused her parents’ death, she discovers that her life is somehow related to Lawrence’s. To get closer to Sisley, Lawrence even joins the investigation company. He meets Chris Lai, who is pursuing Sisley. Lawrence and Sisley eventually discover that many accidents appear to be controlled by someone behind the scenes. Just as they get close to the truth, a person who resembles Lawrence’s late wife (also played by Selena) appears. It turns out that both Chris and Selena are hiding their secret backgrounds…

Overview - Tomorrow Is Another Day

Senior correctional officer Lawrence Ng is stationed at the Stanley Prison and is in charge of prisoner discipline. Clashing with prisoners every day, he is under heavy pressure and must act carefully every step of the way. In contrast, his subordinate Vincent Wong frequently ignores the rules and has close contact with the prisoners, even developing a relationship with one of them. This causes a lot of tension between him and Lawrence.

Kate Tsui, who works at the Lo Wu Correctional Institution, has known Lawrence for many years. Despite their ten year age gap, she bravely expresses her love for him, but is met with his swift rejection. Lawrence's friend and colleague, Kenny Wong, who works in the Rehabilitation Division, knows that Lawrence is only using his sister (Jacqueline Wong) as an excuse to avoid new relationships because of his previous failed marriage. But Kenny is too busy with his own family problems to offer much help. Luckily, Kenny has the support of Lawrence's ex-wife (Jade Leung) and his colleague Tracy Chu.

The ordeals inside and outside the prison cell lead to complicated stories that most people cannot understand. With a large riot waiting to break out, Lawrence and his colleagues' lives are put into danger. In the end, can they overcome the challenges and complete their mission?

TVB Fans Party 2014

This year, I was really lucky to win tickets to the TVB Fans Party, hosted by Fairchild TV. Lawrence Ng, Fred Cheng and Edwin Siu were the performers. (See photos from their autograph session.)

The show started at around 8:30 pm with trailers for the current series Line Walker and All That Is Bitter Is Sweet. Then the stars were introduced with a montage of their recent roles. They came out one-by-one to throw T-shirts into the crowd. Lawrence accidentally flung his bracelet into the crowd too!

A few lucky audience members were picked to go on stage to play games with the stars. In the first game, they had to roll a dice and answer questions to advance their game piece on a board. For the second game, they had to transport tennis balls through plastic tubes worn on their bodies. The final game was charades using the titles of TVB dramas. Edwin's team won all three games.

The most anticipated part of the night was certainly the singing portions. Fred was up first. The first song that he sang is a yet-to-be-released track from his upcoming album, "Place" (地方), also the sub-theme song of Overachievers. He also performed "Nobody" (無名氏) and "Panda" (熊貓). 

Edwin sang the theme songs of Daddy Good Deeds and Brother's Keeper, as well as a Mandarin song called "Dream to Awakening" (夢醒時分). 

Lawrence was the final performer of the night. Since his role in Never Dance Alone was named "Alan", he chose two classic songs by Alan Tam, "Love of My Life" (一生中最愛) and "Roots of Love" (愛的根源). Finally, he sang David Tao's "Love Is Simple" (愛很簡單), which he said was the love song belonging to him and his wife. 

At the end, they handed out more T-shirts and posters to the audience. I couldn't get any of the gifts, but at least I got some close-up shots of the three stars!

Never Dance Alone Review

Review:
Put seven women together and I had expected a cat fight. Luckily, Never Dance Alone chooses a different path. It turned out to be an entertaining and heartfelt series.

For older viewers, it was a nice trip down memory lane. Watching this series with my parents, they couldn't help but share memories from their school days. Alan Tam's songs were artfully used to enhance the feeling of nostalgia. But viewers of all ages will find that they can resonate with the messages about friendship and dreams. The series was thoughtful in its examination of friendship and inspiring in its message to pursue your dreams.

The story occurs in the past and present. I like the interconnections between the two time frames, with the two generations doing some of the exact same things. The casting of the young actresses was done well. They all bare resemblance to their older versions. Their acting is better than most newbies and they exhibited a youthful energy. They were given ample screen-time, which unfortunately meant less time for the veterans.

Carman Lee was phenomenal. Never have I been so entranced by a performance. It's hard to look away from her whenever she is on-screen. Her every expression, every movement, every line delivered was perfect. Her chemistry with her on-screen husband, Lawrence Cheng, was impeccable. Not to mention her stunning beauty regardless of whatever her real age might be.

Flora Chan turned in an excellent performance as well. She carried herself with the arrogant manner of her character. Yet at the same time, she was able to make her character one that the audience would sympathize instead of hate. And her dancing was spectacular.

The other actresses also left memorable impressions with their characters. Each of them fully embodied their characters and acted in their roles without restraint. The bond between the ladies feels genuine and deep, as if they really have known each other for 20 years. I have not seen most of these actresses before and I am truly wowed by their talent.

The series is rounded off with good performances from the supporting cast. Lawrence Ng shows off his comedic side, a big difference from his normally professional image. Lawrence Cheng plays in his typical loving husband role, but as I said, his chemistry with Carman was remarkable. Miu Kan Fung was superb as the mean mother-in-law. Special mention to the maid Daisy who was seriously hilarious. Even Eliza Sam has improved to the point that her acting and accent doesn't bother me here. It was great to see the guest stars too, including Eric Tsang himself!


Rating: 5/5. A rare gem.
