Historical Context: Always and Ever Characters

Bao Zheng (包拯) was a government official during the Song Dynasty. He was well-known for his honesty and impartiality. He treated everyone who came before his court equally, regardless of their rank or connections. During his career, he impeached many corrupt officials, including his own uncle and that of an imperial concubine. He also implemented changes to make the court system more accessible to commoners. Though he was appointed to high offices, Bao Zheng lived a modest life. He observed filial principles closely, even delaying the start of his career to take care of his elderly parents.

Because of his honourable character, Bao Zheng was adored by the people. They gave him the nickname of “Clear Sky Bao” (包青天), which is to mean that the truth will come out as clear as the sky in any case investigated by him. His name is now synonymous with justice and integrity, the hallmarks of an ideal official.

Justice Bao is often portrayed in popular culture with a black face and crescent birthmark. In the legends, he has three sets of guillotines, each adorned with the head of a different animal.

-          The dog-headed one was used on commoners
-          The tiger-headed one was used on government officials
-          The dragon-headed one was used on noblemen and royalty

Justice Bao had the authority to execute anyone without requiring the approval of the emperor. He also possesses a golden rod and sword, bestowed by the previous emperor, symbolizing his power to speak out against the emperor’s wrongdoings.

Emperor Renzong (宋仁宗) was the 4th emperor of the Song Dynasty. Succeeding his father at age 13, he stayed on the throne for 42 years – the longest of all Song emperors. His reign is generally regarded to be a prosperous era, but also the beginning of the Song Dynasty’s weakening.

Much of his reign was marked by peace, as Renzong agreed to peace treaties with neighboring states. Of course, peace came at a price. Because the Song court was required to pay large tributes to the other states, citizens were burdened with heavy taxes. Also, the government still had to pay the idle army, which accounted for 70% of tax revenues. To his credit, Renzong did not add to the state’s burden with lavish expenditures. For instance, he was once served crab for dinner, but upon hearing that a single crab cost $1000, he could not bring himself to eat it.

The Song dynasty was known to have tolerant policies towards scholars. This was particularly true under Renzong because of his personal interest in Confucianism. He set the precedent of combining the “Four Books” for learning. He also ordered that the imperial library be reorganized and catalogued. This open policy towards scholars allowed for literary and scientific development. Six of the Eight Great Poets of Tang and Song lived during this time. Many important inventions first appeared during Renzong’s reign, such as government-issued paper currency, formula for gunpowder, movable type and the compass.

Emperor Renzong died without an heir (his three sons all died young) and was succeeded by his cousin’s son. Emperor Renzong had been widely respected for his benevolent rule. Upon hearing news of his death, Song citizens wept openly in mourning. Even the Liao ruler paid tribute to him and built a memorial for Renzong. Years later, when the Jin invaded Song, they raided the tombs of the Song emperors, but left Renzong’s grave untouched because of their respect for him. Later generations will often learn about Renzong through the stories of Justice Bao. He is the prince referenced to in the case of “Switching Wildcat for Crown Prince” (狸貓換太子).

Princess Hing-Sau (慶壽公主) was the tenth daughter of Emperor Renzong. She was one of the longest-living princesses in Chinese history, living through seven emperors before her death at the age of 86. During the Jingkang Incident (靖康之難), the Jin invaded the Song capital and captured many members of the imperial family. However, the princess was able to evade capture because the Jin thought that a princess from so many generations ago* would surely be dead. With the establishment of the Southern Song Dynasty, Princess Hing-Sau moved south along with the royal court, where she spent the rest of her life.

*The Jingkang Incident occurred during the reign of Emperor Qinzong, who was the fifth emperor to take the throne after the princess’s father, Renzong.

Fictional Characters

Zhan Zhao (展昭) serves as bodyguard to Bao Zheng. He is one of the heroes in the novel The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (七俠五義). As a youth, he roamed the country and helped people in need. He rescued Bao Zheng four times. The grateful Justice Bao recommended Zhan Zhao to the emperor, who granted him the position of a fourth-rank imperial guard and the nickname “Royal Cat”.

Gongsun Ce (公孫策) is Bao Zheng's assistant. He is highly intelligent and knowledgable in many subject areas. Despite this, he did not want to be a government official as he despised their corruption. When he met the righteous Bao Zheng, he finally decided to take up the post of a sixth-ranking law clerk so that he could help Justice Bao solve cases. He often disguised himself as a medicine man or fortune teller to make investigations. He is the designer of Justice Bao's guillotines.

Canadian MCI Winners

Since the inception of the Miss Chinese International Pageant in 1988, Canada has had strong representation, winning 10 of 23 titles (Go Canada!) Among Canadian cities, Vancouver is the most successful, capturing 6 titles and producing recognizable names such as Bernice Liu, Linda Chung, Leanne Li and Eliza Sum.

Here are the winners (since 2002) hailing from Canada:

2001 – Bernice Liu (1st) was the first winner from Vancouver and her win would mark the beginning of Vancouver’s dominance of the MCI competition. She was immediately cast in Virtues of Harmony, earning her widespread recognition. She was put on the fast-track to stardom with a lead role in only her third drama (Survivor's Law); however, she left TVB in 2011. She is now filming for Mainland productions and HKTV.

2002 – Vancouver became the first (and so far, only) city to produce consecutive MCI winners with the crowning of Shirley Zhou (1st). Also from Canada was Christie Bartram (3rd) from Toronto. Neither went on to a career in the entertainment industry.

2004 – Linda Chung (1st) hula-hooped her way through the Vancouver and MCI pageants. Following in Bernice’s footsteps, Linda got a role in Virtues of Harmony II and took on lead roles shortly after that. Now, she has established herself as a top fadan at TVB. She has also launched a music career, releasing three major discs and a compilation.

2005 – Leanne Li (1st) became the fourth Vancouver winner in five years. She beat out favourites Fala Chen from New York and Kate Tsui from Hong Kong to take home the MCI crown. However, she has yet to attain top fadan status like Fala or Kate. She has only been playing secondary characters in dramas and is still awaiting a breakthrough role. She is currently dating fellow TVB actor Wong Cho Lam.

2008 – Sherry Chen (3rd) from Toronto had minor roles in a handful of TVB dramas, before she changed careers to become a sales and marketing manager at Hong Kong Airlines. She has returned to TVB to film, quite fittingly, in Triumph in the Skies II. She has an impressive academic background, with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto (same school as me!) and has studied at Oxford and Hong Kong U.

2009 – I took particular notice of Christine Kuo (1st) because she took home an astounding five awards from the Toronto pageant. She easily captured the MCI crown, and is now an up-and-rising star at TVB, with notable roles in Tiger Cubs and Ghetto Justice II. Cici Chen (3rd) from Vancouver is currently signed with Canada’s Fairchild Television.

2010 – Eliza Sam (1st) from Vancouver has seen her stock rise rapidly ever since her role in Divas in Distress. She scored 3 nominations at the TVB awards in just her first year and is labelled as one of the new generation “goddesses”. Candy Chang (3rd) from Toronto also garnered recognition with a popular role in The Hippocratic Crush, but faces an uncertain future after being embroiled in a drug-trafficking scandal. Eliza and Candy are currently collaborating in The Hippocratic Crush II.

2013 – Congratulations to Gloria Tang (1st) from Vancouver. We will see what future awaits her.

2013 Forecast

Get Used to Seeing...

Sequels

加拿大都市网

The creatively-challenged TVB has resorted to producing sequels or spin-offs of well-received dramas. Not only does it require less novelty, sequels almost always have tons of hype and grab high ratings. While some fans are excited for a continuation of their favourite series, others may be less eager to see a reboot with different characters and inconsistent scripting. Can the sequels prove to be as successful as the original production?

Upcoming Sequels: Beauty at War, Triumph in the Skies II, A Great Way to Care II, The Hippocratic Crush II, Rosy Business 3

The “Cantonese-Challenged” Trio

Like it or not, Aimee Chan, Eliza Sam and Christine Kuo will continue to be heavily promoted by TVB. There will likely be at least one of them in every upcoming series. Aimee currently has the most dramas lined up among all of TVB’s fadans and even has the chance to co-lead in some of them. Meanwhile, Christine and Eliza will appear in some of those anticipated sequels. There is no shortage of opportunities for the trio, but can they win the hearts of the audience?

Upcoming Dramas:
Aimee – Ruse of Engagement, Love Exceeds the Coastline, A Great Way to Care II, Unrequited Love in Twin Cities, Cold Mountain Hidden Dragon

Eliza – Triumph in the Skies II, The Hippocratic Crush II, Sniper Attack 2013

Christine – Beauty at War, A Great Way to Care II, Three Lifetimes of Fate

The “Chan-Chan” Pairing

Posted Image

It’s Moses and Aimee Chan off-screen, but on-screen, it will be Ruco and Aimee Chan. They share three series together in 2013, playing a couple in two of them. Their relationship will be put to the test in Ruse of Engagement and Unrequited Love in Twin Cities. Can their on-screen love story be as sweet as the real-life “Double Chan” relationship?

Upcoming Dramas: Ruse of Engagement, Love Exceeds the Coastline, Unrequited Love in Twin Cities

Breakthroughs?

Ruco Chan

Ruco became popular with his role in The Other Truth, but had a quiet year in 2012. He will be looking to make more noise in 2013, where he stars in five dramas. Among them, his roles in Ruse of Engagement and Big Wheel seem to be the most promising. In both, he is a semi-good, semi-villainous police officer, a type that tends to attract lots of fanfare.

Upcoming Dramas: Heart Road GPS, Ruse of Engagement, Love Exceeds the Coastline, Big Wheel, Unrequited Love in Twin Cities

Edwin Siu

Edwin is coming off a great year that saw him nominated for the Most Improved and Best Supporting Actor awards. He will continue to feature in several big productions, such as in Detective Columbo and Rosy Business 3, both alongside TV King Wayne Lai . He gets his chance to co-lead a series (with Ruco) in Big Wheel. He may very well be a strong contender again for next year's Most Improved award.

Upcoming Dramas: Detective Columbo, A Great Way to Care II, Big Wheel, Rosy Business 3

Natalie Tong

Natalie already had plenty of screen time in 2012, but this year will see her finally attain lead actress status in Detective Columbo, where she will act out two roles. She is also part of the highly anticipated Rosy Business 3, where she is the second female lead after Myolie Wu. She must enjoy working with Wayne Lai since Rosy Business 3 will be her fourth consecutive series with him.

Upcoming Dramas: Detective Columbo, Rosy Business 3

Tavia Yeung

Hard to imagine why the reigning TV Queen will have a “breakthrough”, but Tavia’s role as a schizophrenic in A Great Way to Care II sounds exactly like the type of role that will win over her naysayers.

Upcoming Dramas: A Great Way to Care II, The Hippocratic Crush II
