TVB Sales Presentation 2016

Long Time No See

Legal Strongman - Liu Kai-chi and Alex Fong return to TVB in this legal thriller.

Alex Fong is well-known inside and outside of the courtroom as an undefeated lawyer. In order to reap greater benefits, he joins Hong Kong's largest Chinese-owned firm. The reserved and introverted Liu Kai-chi is the managing partner of the firm. He faithfully fulfills his responsibilities while secretly cultivating power with an aim for the firm's highest position. With the firm's chairman position open, the two of them fight over life and death to fill the position.

Interest Level: 4.5/5. Big fan of legal thrillers. Some of the trailer sounds eerily similar to HKTV's The Election.

Triad Leader Under the Line of Fire - Kent Cheng and Kingdom Yuen have been lured back by Producer Leung Choi-Yuen. The three of them last collaborated in King Maker.

The underworld is a battleground for gangsters... A former triad boss has stepped down and is operating a neighbourhood restaurant, but his buddies want to make a comeback! I want to sell tofu pork-belly rice, but you want me to fight again. Brotherhood in this day and age, is there still a say?

Interest Level: 2/5. Looks like a lame gangster comedy. Wished TVB could have used the star power for a harder-hitting drama.

Obligatory Police Series

K9 Cop

He is a police officer who abhors evil and protects the weak. He is a police dog who is loyal, courageous and obedient. He helps him, once a guard dog for the triads, turn over a new leaf. Human and dog become the police force's best team.

Interest Level: 2.5/5. Not the thriller type of police series.

EU Overtime Mission

The EU's new female sergeant has discovered a portal to travel through time. She thought she could save lives, fight crime, repair her relationship and rewrite history. But history becomes more and more messed up and the situation spins out of control. In the end, how can she reverse the situation?

Interest Level: 3.5/5. Interesting twist to the time-travelling plot that TVB has used too often lately. Reminds me of the film "Edge of Tomorrow".

Misrepresented History

The Last Healer in Forbidden City - Empress Dowager Cixi was obviously a kind, loving woman, right?

The death of the Guangxu Emperor is one of China's historical mysteries. Did Cixi poison him? Was is Yuan Shiki's plot? An act of the Revolutionary Party? Or did he die from purely natural causes? Guangxu's most trusted imperial physician will unravel one of China's greatest mysteries!

Interest Level: 5/5. Excited to delve into the rich historical context of this series!

Omg, the cast...

Love as a Predatory Affair - No, you are not looking at the variety show section.

Love is like the food chain. At the top, there are the "tall, rich, handsome" and "white, rich, beautiful" who sweep the playing field in the competition for love. At the bottom, there are the "leftover ladies", "poison males" and "poor, short, ugly" who are secretly planning a revolt! This openly secret battle is both ridiculous and hilarious, and also reflective of reality.

Interest Level: 0/5. Zip.

Fashion War - A chance to learn who all the third-tier actresses at TVB are.

A top fashion magazine editor, a god within the fashion industry, has pegged a MK girl as his successor?! The fashion industry appears to be glamorous, but behind the glamour is a dark and ugly arena that is full of schemes. To survive, everyone puts on a fake mask and has ulterior motives.

Interest Level: 1/5. Moses Chan has been so terrible lately.

Peculiar Taste - Someone certainly had a peculiar taste in choosing the cast.

The golden lotus flower, awarded by the imperial court, is a symbol for a top restaurant. Having it equals to having money, fame and status. He is a food critic from hell who naturally possesses a golden tongue. He is a rising celebrity chef. The two of them are both rivals and friends, competing with their cooking and using taste to determine who is better.

Interest Level: 0/5. Can't decide if the cast is worse or the costumes.

TVB Ran Out of New Ideas

Brother's Keeper II - How much money do you need to give for TVB to make a series about you? Ask Ko Kei Bakery.

"When buying souvenirs in Macau, I only buy from Lo Shun Kei." Edwin Siu and Kristal Tin travel to Japan to find quality ingredients. Facing malicious attacks from their competitors, Edwin and Kristal must make choices. Will they stick to their principles? Or will they take measures to survive in the face of adversity? The challenges start once again...

Interest Level: 3/5. Ruco Chan was the main appeal in the original.

You From Kitty Star - A spin-off with the original cast of Ghost of Relativity.

In 2015, Ghost of Relativity used brainwaves to explain the existence of ghosts. Through its witty and humorous style, the story of a love triangle between humans and a ghost became popular among the HK audience. Now, the original cast and production team of Ghost of Relativity will make a brand new comedy "You From Kitty Star". It will use a half-scientific theory to explain cat-aliens who come to Earth. Their contact with people on Earth will lead to many surprising stories.

Interest Level: 1.5/5. Ghost of Relativity was aptly named. It was good relative to the other crap series. That doesn't mean it needs a spin-off.

House of Spirits - A remake of 1980 TVB drama Don't Look Now.

Using supernatural and fantasy in a relaxed way, this series conveys how modern people are focused on their jobs and forget about the value of family. A pair of happy ghosts who love helping people lend their superpowers to help a big brother who strives to protect his younger siblings and link the family together with love. A heart-warming comedy with surprises, joy, laughter and tears.

Interest Level: 2/5. The trailer looks really stupid.

Now I've Ran Out of Creative Category Titles

Presumed Accidents - Presumably the Lawrence Ng-Sisley Choi pairing is an accident?

An "accident" causes a father to be separated from his daughter, but through another series of "accidents", their fates are brought back together. Are "accidents" purely coincidences or a carefully arranged conspiracy?

Interest Level: 4/5. I like the dark and shady feel.

A Fist Within Four Walls

The Kowloon Walled City in the 1950s was an unpoliced area and a source for crime. "Eight Extremities Fist" is a powerful style that forces close-range attacks which are rapid in succession and able to change quickly. Two youths who are trained in martial arts search for the truth of their father's murder, while carrying out his last wish to drive out evil from the Walled City!

Interest Level: 3.5/5. Only for Ruco Chan and Nancy Wu. Grace Wong and Moon Lau look so out of place in the trailer.

3 of Honour - A TVB-Mainland collaboration, featuring Wong Cho Lam and Linda Chung. Wong Jing is the producer, so be ready for god-awful dubbing again.

Interest Level: 1/5. We all know how Wong Jing's last production turned out to be.

FILMART 2015 - Series Briefs

View FILMART trailers here

Brother's Keeper II - Edwin Siu and Kristal Tin worked hard to establish the "Law Shun Kei" brand in Hong Kong and Macau. However, it has attracted the displeasure of real estate developer Hugo Ng, who uses underhand tactics to suppress them. Edwin is betrayed by his trusted aide, Matt Yeung. Feeling that the world is too chaotic, he travels to Japan in search of a peaceful space. There, he falls in love with a secretive girl, Grace Chan, and gets embroiled in a murder case from twenty years ago! Meanwhile, Kristal's husband, Louis Yuen, suffers a brain injury and now treats her as a stranger. In addition, there is the return of Ruco Chan, who is looking for his "golden biscuit". Faced with all these sudden problems, how will Edwin and Kristal handle it?

Anticipation Level: 2.5/5. Boy, am I so excited for an extended Koi Kei Bakery commercial.

Blue Veins - Five hundred years ago, Kevin Cheng was a ferocious bandit. During a battle against vampires, he was struck by lightning and from then on, the group of bandits all became immortals. Nowadays, Kevin hides his identity and operates a late-night restaurant to help him pass his sleepless nights. He also runs a martial arts studio, where he teaches his two students, Wong Yau-Nam and Luk Wing-Kuen, martial arts in order to stand up for the poor.

At the onset of the story, Kevin meets a kind-hearted forensic pathologist, Kay Tse. Her memories and powers have been frozen, so she does not know that she is a vampire. The only power that she retains is the ability to revive a corpse for one minute. Kevin stays by her side and helps her to slowly regain her memory and powers. But ultimately, their naturally opposing identities turn their romance into a catastrophe, with dangers coming from everywhere. Kevin is willing to sacrifice himself to save Kay. At the edge between life and death, they discover that the origins of vampires and immortals actually comes from the future...

Anticipation Level: 2/5. Not a fan of vampire series, but Grace's sexy scenes in the trailer has upped my interest.

Captain of Destiny - While chasing a thief, police officer Grace Chan is accidentally caught up in a waterspout and brought back to the Qing Dynasty, where she meets Tony Hung, the pirate that dominated the Hong Kong waters at that time. The two of them start off as rivals, but fall deeply in love after going through life and death situations together. The 11th prince (Ruco Chan) leads the navy in a bloody battle against Tony. Grace is captured by Ruco while trying to save Tony. The proud and arrogant prince is charmed by her modern intelligence and ultimately abandons his ambitions to succeed the throne for her. Grace finally has a chance to return to modern Hong Kong, yet finds it hard to let go of the two men that have fallen for her. At a moment between life and death, Grace travels through time again and returns to modern Hong Kong. However, she has lost her memories. She can only search for the lost fate from a previous life in the modern world.

Anticipation Level: 4/5. Everything seems great except the CGI.

Lord of Shanghai - Anthony Wong came from humble beginnings. At a time when criminal forces ran rampant, Anthony got along well with the gangster leader, Wayne Lai. With Wayne as the brave fighter and Anthony as the strategist, they build their success together. As Anthony strives to climb upwards, he sacrifices a romance with Myolie Wu, a Peking opera student. This becomes his greatest regret in life. Later on, Anthony gains the favour of casino boss Alice Chan and serves under the tutelage of Shanghai tycoon Kent Tong. He rises rapidly and soon, he, along with Wayne and Kent, become prominent figures in Shanghai.

However, Kent and Wayne's contentions grow deeper by the day, leading to bloody battles on the streets of Shanghai. Anthony uses his ways to suppress both of them and establish himself as the only tycoon in Shanghai, with control over the legal and illegal forces. But behind the seeming peacefulness are hidden dangers. Foreign forces each have control over portions of Shanghai, while the Japanese are planning an invasion of China. Anthony and his disciplines contribute money and energy to the resistance effort. Myolie, by now a famous star, encounters Anthony again. His patriotic actions change her opinion of him and she stays by his side during the war. The Japanese officially begin their invasion. As Shanghai enters into a "Solitary Island" period, Anthony sets aside his personal interests to resist against the Japanese and the puppet government. On the other hand, Wayne chooses to become a Chinese traitor for his own gain. The sworn brothers reach a breaking point. For the sake of national interests, Anthony has no choice but to sacrifice brotherhood and allow blood to splatter in Shanghai...

Anticipation Level: 4/5. A war-time epic that hopefully does not include a sickly girl who writes a diary...

Limelight Years - Liza Wang is the pop queen of her generation, with 40 years of stage experience and tens of thousands of fans. She has many friends, but even more enemies. At the same time, she is a woman who has experienced two failed marriages and has three children who are like strangers. In her later years, she may escape death, but she cannot avoid loneliness. Reflecting back on her life, she realizes that she has sung for her career, but never once sung for her loved ones! She decides to hold what could be her last concert and invites every single person that she has loved or has loved her. In the process, she encounters a photographer who is destined to be in a supporting role, a young man who is determined not to be an extra, and an over-aged girl who does not know what role she wants to play yet. It results in an off-tuned symphony that brings out laughter and tears! Life is like a stage. Whether it is the main or supporting character, as long as they make a gorgeous turnaround after falling down and continue to sing wholeheartedly, their loved ones will certainly applaud for them.

Anticipation Level: 3/5. Judging from the trailer, Linda just might redeem herself with this series.

With or Without You - Bobby Au-Yeung, an eminent writer from the Northern Song Dynasty, is unable to forget about his late wife and thus, ignores Joey Meng's love for him. However, the food lover in him is eventually moved by Joey's braised pork dish and they get married. Bobby thought life would be great after his marriage, but a slew of family problems is making his head spin! On one hand, he has to worry if his sister, Jacqueline Wong, is being tricked by the flirty scholar, Vincent Wong. On the other hand, he is concerned that his other sister, Harriet Yeung, is still hung up on Tyson Chak, who is now the husband of a "lioness" wife, Alice Chan. He is driven to exhaustion from having to save his upright brother from political opponents. In addition, he needs to make his son accept Joey as his new step-mother, as well as deal with his own martial issues...

Aside from his family problems, Bobby also faces conflict in the imperial court. He has to cope with an unreasonable princess, engage in a verbal war with the opposing minister Pal Sinn, and think of creative ways to make the Emperor accept his proposals. Bobby uses a painting to cause Pal to lose his minister position, but then, he is unwittingly drawn into a plot by a Liao spy (Sire Ma) that will endanger the Song empire. The most unexpected thing is that one of Sire's subordinates is actually one of his family members who is purposely trying to ruin the relationship between him and Joey! Although Bobby finally succeeds in exposing the conspiracy and preserve the Song Dynasty, the Emperor is increasingly distrusting of him. The Emperor accuses him of writing a treasonous poem and seems intent on putting him to death...

Anticipation Level: 3.5/5. Bobby is lovely, but all the family drama makes my head spin too!

Rogue Emperor - In the late-1970s, graffiti with the words "Rogue Emperor" appeared on the streets of Hong Kong. At first, it seemed like just the silly work of a homeless man, but when a social worker (Tracy Chu) is sent to help him, she realizes that he is a legendary character that has been ignored. Kenneth Ma was initially a poor farmer. In order to marry his childhood lover, Niki Chow, he experienced many unimaginable things, from being banished from his village to becoming deputy commander, from escaped prisoner to Shanghai tycoon and even the last emperor of China! Kenneth faced all these ups and downs calmly, but there is one thing that he can never let go – the repeated separation and reunion from Niki. It seems that they cannot break the curse of being able to go through difficult times together, but not prosperity.

Anticipation Level: 3/5. It should be fun to see all the experiences that Kenneth goes through.

Wudang Rules - This series talks about a group of young people, who, for different reasons, chose to leave the bustling city and go to the Wudang Mountains to learn martial arts from two masters. Together they lead a peaceful and quiet lifestyle and study the wisdom in Taoist philosophy. After several months, the group has learnt profound martial arts, established deep friendships and have a better understanding of human nature. It helps them get rid of the burdens that they had before going up to the mountains and regain their confidence so that they can continue to face the life ahead of them. But at this time, a secret that was between them is revealed, causing their friendship and beliefs to be seriously tested.

Anticipation Level: 1.5/5. Sounds so preachy, though I'm interested in the secret between the group.

Under the Veil - In Buddhism, all outer appearances are false, reality is seen in the heart. Although people can have similar appearances, their minds will still lead them to do different actions. Through the folktales "Hairpin Exchange", "Chasing Fish" and "Judge Luk", it will show the love, hate, greed, anger and lust of mankind. There are people who are selfish and others that are altruistic; some have unsatisfied greed, others do not care about fame. Everything in the world is a mere shadow and only those with a good heart can understand the true meaning of life. Double Fantasies was a TVB classic. Twenty years later, with advanced filming and CGI technologies, the audience can view it from a brand new perspective.

Anticipation Level: 2.5/5. Should be interesting to see most of the cast portray two roles.

Historical Context: Touch-Base Policy

Headline: HK government cancels Touch-Base Policy as of midnight (October 26, 1980)

We see it in TVB dramas all the time. A police officer stops someone on the streets and asks to see their identity card. Ever wonder why everyone in Hong Kong must carry their identity cards with them at all times? Well, read on...

Before 1949, people could move freely between Hong Kong (then a British colony) and China. But with the Chinese Civil War, waves of refugees from China rushed to Hong Kong. The population of Hong Kong increased almost three-fold in just five years between 1945 and 1950. The sudden large increase in population posed a huge problem. A heavy strain was put on public utilities, such as housing, education and social services.

Famous people who immigrated to HK during this time: Ha Yu, Kara Hui, Lo Hoi Pang

In 1974, the Hong Kong government introduced the Touch-Base Policy (抵壘政策), which stated that immigrants who reached the city and connected (ie. "touched base") with their relatives, could apply for Hong Kong residency. Those who were caught at the borders were sent back to China immediately.

The rationale behind the policy is that if the immigrants continued to live in Hong Kong with an illegal status, they would enter the black market for labour or participate in criminal activities. Moreover, the immigrants could serve as a source of cheap labour for the thriving industries.

Anyone who made it past Boundary Street was considered to have reached urban territory.

Immigrants had to be south of Boundary Street before they were safely "in the city". When China ceded Hong Kong to Britain, the line was drawn at Boundary Street, with the north belonging to China and south belonging to Britain. Later, the British negotiated a 99-year lease for the "New Territories", making the territory north of Boundary Street part of Hong Kong as well. Although urban development sprawled up on both sides of the street, it was still traditionally seen as the separation between rural and urban.

However, the Touch-Base Policy did nothing to stop the influx of immigrants. If anything, it may have encouraged people to make repeated attempts to get to Hong Kong. In October 1980, the government abolished the Touch-Base Policy. Immigrants who had arrived before October 23 were given a three-day grace period to register for Hong Kong identity. After that, illegal immigrants were subjected to repatriation upon arrest.

Headline: HK government reminds residents over age 15 to carry their identity cards

The implication was that everyone above age 15 in Hong Kong was now required to carry their identity cards with them and present it to a law enforcement officer when requested, so as to detect illegal immigrants.

"Brother's Keeper" Theme Song

The theme song of Brother's Keeper is "Big Wheel" (巨輪), sung by Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu.

Both Ruco and Edwin have nice voices, which mesh together well and is very suitable with the melody.

Overview - Brother's Keeper

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. Under the wheel of time, two brothers are separated and reunited, only to be driven apart again by their choices…

Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu are step-brothers. Fate not only separates them in two places, but also puts them through the dramatic changes of history. Younger brother Edwin lived in Macau with their mother Louise Lee as illegal residents. He went through many challenges, relying on hard work and help from his friends Kristal Tin and Louis Yuen, in order to reach success. On the other hand, elder brother Ruco lived independently in Hong Kong and chose to take the shortcut. He allied with gangster Louis Cheung and slept with the wealthy Ankie Beilke. His actions leave girlfriend Linda Chung heart-broken; in the end, he loses both money and love. Edwin hopes to bring Ruco back on track, but Ruco is adamant in his ways, causing the brothers to turn into rivals. Making matters worse, they fall in love with the same person. Through the Hong Kong and Macau handovers, SARS epidemic, global financial crisis and other era-marking events, they experience the ups and downs of life, and learn that whether it is success or failure, there is a price to pay. Two initially interdependent brothers grow further and further apart in the face of unpredictability and change, but one belief is still firmly implanted in their shared DNA. No matter what the challenges are, they will meet again someday along a new, vibrant path…

I'm excited for this because (1) Ruco!! and (2) it will trace the modern history of Hong Kong and Macau, which I obviously love.

TVB Sales Presentation Filming

Updated October 20, 2012 with more new dramas.

With all the talk about TVB Anniversary Awards, it also means another thing is coming up. If you guessed the annual TVB Sales Presentation, you're correct!

Each year, TVB hosts a show for advertising clients. It is a chance to showcase all the exciting new programmes that is in store for the upcoming year (so, you know, advertisers can pour more money in TVB's bank account). This year's event will be held on November 8 (which no one needs to care about except for the lucky people attending). The important date to be circled on fans' calenders is November 24, when the programme will be aired.

Currently, all the siu-sang and fadans are busy sucking up to senior executives for awards filming for sales presentation clips. Here's a glimspe of what is in store for 2013:

Rosy Business 3 - Out with Sheren Tang and Pierre Ngo. In with Myolie Wu and Edwin Siu. Wayne Lai stays. Lee Tim-sing stays (with TVB).

Myolie and Wayne are spies. Edwin is the villian. The story takes place in 1920-30s China.

The Hippocratic Crush 2 - The original cast will remain intact with Lawrence Ng joining them. Here's hoping everyone remembers how to be a doctor and not just be involved in an endless love triangle (ahem, Ghetto Justice 2).

Three Lifetimes of Fate - Bobby Au-yeung and Esther Kwan continues their fate - for three lifetimes and a thousand years this time. Let's call it Maiden's Vow 2.

Bobby will be Justice Bao (ancient), detective (pre-modern) and police officer (modern). Esther will portray a talented lady (ancient), triad leader (pre-modern) and talk show host (modern). Ben Wong will obviously get the bad guy role.

Eat For Slave - Raymond Lam and Ron Ng reunite for fans of the RR bromance. The female cast will consist of Fala Chen, Sharon Chan and Nancy Wu.

The story takes place in the Qing Dynasty. Raymond will be an Emperor. Fala and Nancy are fighters. Sharon Chan might be a concubine the looks of her costume. I'm guessing Ron Ng will be the fatty that will make the series live up to its name?

Good Heart Goes Haywire - Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Niki Chow, Vincent Wong, Joey Meng, Mandy Wong.

See location filming for this series here.

Sniper Attack 2013 - Laughing Gor returns? Not quite. But Michael Tse will be a cop once again, this time paired with (soon-to-be TV Queen?) Kate Tsui. No undercover work this time (probably). They will be members of the SDU aka Flying Tigers. Well, TVB did promise a Tiger Cubs 2, didn't they?

Office of Spreading Love - The historic collaboration between the TV Kings Wayne Lai and Moses Chan! Not really. People seem to forget that they were both in The Gentle Crackdown (even Moses himself, who said "I've always wanted to work with Wayne. I finally get my wish.")

It is the first time for both Wayne and Moses to portray lawyers. They will battle things out in court over inheritance cases. Fala Chen, Evergreen Mak and Samantha Ko are also part of the cast.

Big Wheel - Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu are long-lost brothers living in Hong Kong and Macau, respectively. What happens when they meet again? In TVB world, there's only one answer: fight over Linda Chung. The story spans 30 years from 1980s to the present.

Cold Mountain Hidden Dragon - Will feature Raymond Wong, Kenneth Ma and Kenny Wong in weird costumes. Female leads are Aimee Chan and former ATV actress Priscilla Wong.

Unrequited Love in Twin Cities - Aimee Chan, Lin Xia Wei (Raymond Lam's cousin) and Tony Hung in a modern drama. The crew travelled to Malaysia for filming, making this the first sales presentation clip that is filmed outside of Hong Kong.
