The Police Career of Ron Ng

Ron's career starts in the Police Training School. After weeks of gruelling training, he emerges as the top cadet. (The Academy)




Ron and the rest of the newly minted officers are dispatched to various police stations. Ron is assigned to the Patrol Sub Unit and later selected to join the Police Tactical Unit. His heroism inspires Madam Kate to join the police force. (On the First Beat)




During his early days on foot patrol, Ron has a clash with Laughing Gor. (movie Turning Point)




After his term with PTU expires, Ron is assigned to the regional Special Duty Squad. He gets handpicked for an undercover mission into the triads, where he encounters Laughing Gor again. With his mission accomplished, he officially joins the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau. (E.U.)




Ron is promoted to Sergeant and reunited with Madam Kate in the Criminal Investigation Department, although Madam Kate has already reached a higher rank than him. (Forensic Heroes III)



Ron receives another promotion to Inspector and gets to lead his own CID team. He is rotated to be a School Liaison Officer in the Police Public Relations Bureau. Afterwards, he is transferred to the Crime Prevention Bureau. (Yes Sir, Sorry Sir)




Next, Ron takes on the challenges and rigours of the Special Duties Unit. His experience there makes him a perfect fit for the Anti-Terrorist Force. (Ruse of Engagement)




Ron rejoins the Criminal Investigation Department and goes on his second undercover mission, except this time, he can continue his daily routine as a police officer while on his mission. He receives a promotion to Senior Inspector. (Black Heart White Soul)




Ron has stint at the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Bureau, where he diffuses a bomb that threatened to destroy Hong Kong's cross-harbour tunnels. (movie Shock Wave)

The Police Career of Madam Kate

Madam Kate's career begins as a cadet in the Police Training School (On the First Beat)




Being a new face, she is the perfect candidate to join the CIB's Surveillance Team (movie Eye in the Sky)




Afterwards, Madam Kate is transferred to the Traffic Branch Headquarters (When Lanes Merge).





Then, she becomes a member of the regional Criminal Investigation Department (A Great Way to Care)




With her stellar performance, Madam Kate is promoted to Senior Inspector and heads up a new CID team (Forensic Heroes III)




Madam Kate's latest move is to the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (Sniper Standoff)




Madam Kate revealed that she will join the Commercial Crime Bureau in the future (The Ultimate Addiction)

TVB Anniversary Series

Heading into TVB Anniversary season, we have some exciting dramas ahead: The Confidant, starring Wayne Lai and Michelle Yim, and Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles, featuring Damien Lau, Idy Chan, Kenneth Ma, and Tavia Yeung among others.

A look back at TVB Anniversary dramas in the past several years.

2011

Forensic Heroes III – The popular Forensic Heroes franchise was rebooted with a fresh cast in an ultra-high-tech atmosphere. Reigning TV King Wayne Lai finds chemistry with a new partner in Maggie Cheung, boosting the series to the top rank in ratings for 2011. Still, Wayne and the series lose to Kevin Cheng’s Law Ba and Ghetto Justice. 

Curse of the Royal Harem – Another palace-scheming production pitting very intelligent women against each other and a rather useless emperor in the background. The series was a new challenge to the actresses as Jessica Hsuan participated in her first Qing-dynasty palace drama and Myolie Wu was cast in her first villian role. Though Jessica’s character prevails in the series, Myolie is the ultimate winner in capturing her first TV Queen title.

Super Snoops – Liza Wang and the Three Gods bring their cross-dressing and imitation talents from variety show to drama. This was the first comedy used as a TVB Anniversary series since 2007. However, the silliness of the series didn’t attract many viewers and the series only managed average ratings, not even breaking into the top ten for the year.

2010

Gun Metal Grey – This series had an intriguing premise about a vigilante police officer, supported by a stellar cast, including two of the Five Tigers – Michael Miu and Felix Wong. Felix agreed to return to TVB for the 30^th anniversary of the first collaboration between him and Michael. Unfortunately, TVB seemed to favour No Regrets more and neglect Gun Metal Grey, leading to a sour ending for TVB and Felix.

No Regrets – Following the success of Rosy Business, Wayne Lai and Sheren Tang led the audience back to the wartime era. The epic and moving story of Lau Sing and Miss Kau easily matched the success of its predecessor as it nearly swept the awards ceremony. Wayne and Sheren became the first duo to win back-to-back TV King and Queen. Surprisingly though, No Regrets lost out on the Best Drama award to Can’t Buy Me Love. 


2009

Beyond the Realm of Conscience – Hoping to recreate the success of War and Beauty, this series had a star-studded cast, featuring four top siu-sangs and fadans alongside strong veterans. In the finale, it broke the all-time ratings record of 50 points, set by Korean drama Jewels in the Palace. Despite this, Beyond was largely overshadowed by Rosy Business at the Anniversary Awards.

Born Rich – Featuring a cast of A-listers, the drama marked the return to TVB of several prominent actors, such as Ray Lui, Kenix Kwok and Jamie Chik. But in the end, it failed to materialize as the audience were simply uninterested in the case of older generation actors and the illogical plot.

2008

Gem of Life – The 82 episode mega-production was all about glamour and riches. It was the most expensive television drama ever produced in Hong Kong history, having a $100 million budget. However, the convoluted plot, messy character relations and sheer length of the series turned away many viewers.

When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West – Joe Ma and Charmaine Sheh find themselves together again after the critically acclaimed Maiden’s Vow. But their chemistry wasn’t enough to save the series from finishing near the bottom in terms of ratings.

Random Things

- Wayne Lai has now starred in an anniversary series for three consecutive years (No Regrets, Forensic Heroes III and The Confidant)

- Nancy Wu has been a part of five anniversary series in the past three years (No Regrets, Gun Metal Grey, Forensic Heroes III, COTRH, The Confidant).

- This is the second year in a row that Wayne and Nancy play a pair in an anniversary series (Forensic Heroes III, The Confidant)

Sequelmania

Nowadays, TVB’s philosophy is basically: Turn anything and everything into a sequel. Big hit? Sequel. Decent ratings? Sequel. We have no idea what to make next? Sequel. So let’s review some of the better and worst sequels/spinoffs plus many upcoming ones.

Good

No Regrets – Still intense and great acting, except the boring Fala and Raymond story.

Forensic Heroes III – Tried for a different feel with all the high-tech stuff, though the cases were not all that special.

D.I.E. Again – Unique in that there are all sorts of weird happenings not seen in other detective series.

The Academy spinoffs – All of the dramas were very good, but they should really stop now. Can’t keep having people die and then come back alive again.

Bad

Burning Flames III – Firefighting made up like 10% of the series. Wong He is in a coma for half of it. Did anyone watch the originals when making this?

Can’t Buy Me Love – The rhyming lines were not funny after the first few times. Urgh…

Moonlight Resonance – Okay, a lot of people liked HOG and MR. I’m in the minority because I didn’t like the yelling, crying and slapping.

Just Love II – Almost completely irrelevant to the legal theme except for the title.

Undecided

A Pillow Case of Mystery II – Wasn't paying much attention when watching this. Akin to D.I.E. ancient version.

Witness Insecurity – A spinoff of Miss Koo from Yes Sir, Sorry Sir, featuring a lot of the same cast. If comparing to the original, it’s 10x better, but that’s not saying much at all.

Upcoming



Ghetto Justice II – Sounding very good, except they just had to add in a love triangle, didn’t they? We shall see.

Triumph in the Skies II – I hope it’s not like Burning Flames 3: Love, love, love, and oh yeah, the occasional flying a plane.

Beauty At War – TVB couldn’t match War & Beauty success in other palace dramas and this one does not look promising.  

The Hippocratic Crush II – Didn’t watch the first one, so not sure. Great theme song though.

A Great Way to Care II – Didn’t watch this either, but makes it seem like people with mental illnesses will commit crimes.

A Chip Off the Block II – The first one was decent comedy except for Sunny Chan. Add Liza Wang, minus Sunny Chan = the second one should be okay.

Big Ifs…

Rosy Business III – Modern version with Wayne Lai and Michelle Yim (?) No doubts on the acting, but can the story be as good?

Gloves Come Off II – Isn’t there enough criticism to persuade TVB not to make a sequel? Not like the first one got very high ratings either (average about 30 points).

Sergeant Tabloid II – Really, are we getting a little ahead of ourselves? The original hasn’t even been aired in HK yet.

Moonlight Resonance sequel – Only hearing rumours in forums, but please don’t let it be true…
