Overview - The Forgotten Day

Cafe waiter Roger Kwok and interior designer Shaun Tam encounter each other and develop a friendship due to an abduction, a case of amnesia, a missing woman and a large sum of money. Shaun has amnesia after being rescued and forgets about the abduction. His wife, Grace Wong, who paid the ransom, is missing. Shaun relies on Roger to figure out what happened and to find Grace. Roger wants to use Shaun to find the missing ransom money while concealing his involvement in the case. With the help of psychologist Roxanne Tong, Shaun recovers fragmented memories. As he gradually pieces together his memory, a surprising truth is revealed.

Overview - A General, A Scholar and A Eunuch

Three late-Ming Dynasty officials - Edwin Siu, Raymond Cho and Matthew Ho - accidentally travel forward four hundred years to modern-day Foshan. They meet Kristal Tin, who is searching for a hidden master chef. When they see a female celebrity on television who looks like the missing crown princess (Grace Wong), Kristal deceives them by saying she can arrange for them to meet her in Hong Kong. Desperate to save the princess, the three officials sign employment contracts and become waiters and a chef at Kristal's restaurant. After his girlfriend died in a car crash, sorrowful psychologist Kenneth Ma spends five years investigating the truth of the incident. It was the year of the Wongs, with three of them dominating the TV screens in 2013.

Mandy Wong 

Fresh off a win last year for Most Improved Actress, Mandy continued her hot streak with 5 dramas. Following the popularity of “Kwan Yi So”, she played loud-mouth characters again, as a pregnant Mainland woman in Friendly Fire and as a materialistic girl in A Change of Heart. Showing her soft side, she was a subdued policewoman in Sergeant Tabloid. In Always and Ever, she got to rub shoulders with Esther Kwan, acting as her villainous younger sister. Reprieving her role as “Mei Suet” in The Hippocratic Crush II, Mandy won a Favourite Character Award in Malaysia's TVB Star Awards.


Grace Wong

Grace has had a career year, appearing in 5 dramas. She had a special thing for lawyers, first trying to seduce Michael Tse in Friendly Fire, then developing a May-December relationship with Pal Sinn in Awfully Lawful. She played two contrasting policewomen roles, a feminine type in Sergeant Tabloid and a rougher type in Bounty Lady. Joining the cast of The Hippocratic Crush II, she caused waves in Benjamin Yuen and Mandy Wong's relationship. Grace was also a constant presence on The Voice of Stars.

Vincent Wong

Last year, Vincent made headlines for receiving 13 slaps from Damien Lau in Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles. He topped his own record by enduring 23 slaps from Susan Tse in Will Power. In another legal drama, Friendly Fire, he was embroiled in a market-fixing case. He was featured in the Autumn story of Seasons of Love and guest-starred as Niki Chow’s ex-boyfriend in Sergeant Tabloid. He collaborated with Niki again in A Change of Heart. His memorable performances this year won him the Most Improved Actor Award.

Eliza Sam

Eliza has climbed the charts rapidly since her debut last year. She made a guest appearance in Inbound Troubles as the young Mimi Chu. She was given exposure in the hit drama Triumph in the Skies II as an flight attendant. She put on a tank top and a tough demeanour for her role as the first female SDU member in Sniper Standoff. Featured in the anniversary drama The Hippocratic Crush II, she has a memorable story with Him Law. She capped the year off with a Most Improved Actress win.

Sharon Chan


Sharon had some refreshing experiences this year. In Friendly Fire, she was paired with new on-screen partner Sammy Leung, but they easily found chemistry together. In Awfully Lawful, Sharon received her first official leading role. She had the opportunity to get up close and personal with "Captain Cool" Julian Cheung  in her guest-star role on Triumph in the Skies II. Finally, in Bounty Lady, she showed off her singing talents and received much praise for her two sub-theme songs.


Benjamin Yuen


Benjamin has been getting heavier promotion lately. In A Change of Heart, he had a daring affair with Joey Meng, including a "car-shaking" scene. He was picked to play the famous "Zhan Zhao" character in Always and Ever. He and Mandy Wong got their happy ending in The Hippocratic Crush II despite facing a major challenge in their relationship. Benjamin also had guest roles in Karma Rider and Bounty Lady. He was named Most Promising Actor in Malaysia's TVB Star Awards.


Matt Yeung and Cilla Kung


Matt and Cilla had a lot fate this year, participating in 4 of the same series together. However, they were only a couple in Slow Boat Home. In Missing You, Cilla worked with the tracing team to help people reunite with their loved ones while Matt was busy plotting against Lin Xia Wei. In the Day of Days, Matt plays villain again and unsuccessfully tries to stage a coup. Cilla played Raymond Wong's sister. In Karma Rider, Cilla and Owen Cheung are star-crossed lovers, while Matt was the head constable. Matt picked up an additional guest role as Him Law's rival in the Spring story of Seasons of Love.

Raymond Cho and Pal Sinn are partners of a solicitor firm. They invite Roger Kwok and Johnson Lee to join the firm as well. Despite their different personalities, the four men share a close bond. They are well-known within the legal circle as "The Big Four Mature Men". Their creative tactics to win court cases has won over many female clients. Unfortunately, someone has swindled money from the firm. To save the firm from financial distress, four female lawyers are brought in. They include Roger's rival (Sharon Chan), Johnson's wealthy wife (Selena Li), a housewife (Joyce Tang) and a barrister who gets entangled with Pal and Johnson (Grace Wong). The eight people's working and private relationships get more and more messy, until they finally realize that there is someone behind all the happenings at the law firm...

Comment: Sounds like it'll be a nice comedy. I always look forward to legal dramas!

Hong Kong's Policewomen

Female officers compose 15% of the Hong Kong Police Force, a relatively high ratio compared to police forces in other major cities. The first female officer was Kimmy Koh, who was appointed to the rank of Police Sub-Inspector in 1949. She mostly handled administrative work and cases involving “moral” issues (such as prostitution and gambling). But still, she set an important precedent.

In 1951, the first class of 10 female officers, trained by Koh, graduated from the Police Training School. They were assigned the numbers from 5001 to 5010. Among them, 林靄思 (#5010), known as “Sister Ten”, stayed with the force the longest. She became the first gun-carrying female officer. She was granted special permission to carry a gun while investigating a murder case in 1953. She went on several undercover missions, from busting drug deals to fraud cases. She also served in the Witness Protection Unit (WPU).

Angelina Lo's character in Sergeant Tabloid is based on the real "Sister Ten".

Initially, though female officers were seen as valuable additions to the force, they were not treated equally as their male counterparts. They were paid lower salaries than men and only worked day shifts. They were regulated to “low-danger” jobs, such as community outreach, prisoner transfers, traffic control and crowd control.

In 1973, the police force instituted equal pay and benefits for male and female officers. As well, females were now permitted to join almost any unit. Beginning in 1995, all cadets, male or female, had to undergo firearms training. Previously, only males were required to take such training. In 1997, the last gender barrier was removed when women were allowed to join the Police Tactical Unit (PTU).

Female officers have always been used for crowd control situations. The rationale (justified or not) is that the crowds tend to be less aggressive when faced against women. In 1962, when a large mass of Mainland immigrants flooded Hong Kong, all the 273 female officers at the time were stationed at the borders. In 1992, female officers were similarly deployed against Vietnamese refugees. A special all-female unit named “Tango Company” was formed and trained for crowd management at large public gatherings.  

Niki and the girls will join the Tango Company to maintain order during protests.

Case #1 - Drug Lord Boyfriend
Niki Chow finally finds a boyfriend (Vincent Wong) who doesn't mind that she is a cop. Not only that, he even shows up at the police station to propose to her. Niki is very touched and immediately agrees. However, while chasing down a suspect, Niki discovers that Vincent is actually a drug lord. As a defender of justice, Niki has no choice but to personally arrest him. This battle leaves an irremovable mark in Niki's heart.

Case #2 - Drug Addict Attack
As a uniformed patrol cop, Oceane Zhu receives a call to handle a case of an unconscious senior. When she arrives at the scene, she is unexpectedly attacked by a drug addict (Oscar Leung), who holds her and Benz Hui hostage with a knife.

Case #3 - Undercover Mission
Niki and the female cops are called upon to go undercover to bust a male prostitution ring. Coincidentally, Michael Tse and his assistant are also there posing as male prostitutes to collect material for their news story. Can the girls successfully complete their mission?

Case #4 - Apartment Sweeps
The Emergency Unit routinely conducts floor-by-floor apartment sweeps. Besides frequently encountering prostitutes, they may possibly come across drug addicts and dangerous criminals. How can the female cops cope with these challenges?

Case #5 - Voyeur Suicide Case
A voyeur who secretly photographed female cops commits suicide in front of Michael after having his identity published in the tabloids. This incident causes Michael to reflect on his actions and fall into a state of confusion. Can he be awakened from this experience?

Case #6 - Anti-Mainland Pregnant Mothers Protest
A group of anti-Mainland pregnant mothers protesters take to the streets to fight for the rights of local mothers. Mandy Wong leads the specially-formed female squadron to maintain order and control the crowds. They are met with unprecedented attacks.

TVB Trends: Rape Scenes

Rape scenes seem to be the new norm at TVB’s scriptwriting office nowadays. In three consecutive series, there have been rape scenes – Aimee Chan in The Last Steep Ascent, Kate Tsui in Highs and Lows, and Tavia Yeung in Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles. I know people have complained that it is disgusting and perverted. I do not condone rape in real life whatsoever, but personally, I have no problems with showing rape scenes on TV. Murder is just as bad and wrong, yet we see it all the time in detective and lawyer shows. Everyone knows it's fake. Besides, how much do we really see from TVB shows anyways? So to the people who are complaining: get a grip of yourself and change the channel if you don’t want to watch it. Not everyone wants to watch rainbows and ponies all the time.

With that being said, the rape scenes at TVB in recent memory.

Aimee Chan in The Last Steep Ascent

Aimee was drinking heavily on the street, catching the eye of a drunken man, who chased her into a back alley and raped her. The scene shows the man ripping her clothes off and slapping her, then it flashes forward of her crying in the alley. She tried to commit suicide after she became pregnant from the rape.

Kate Tsui in Highs and Lows

Kate was forcibly shot with drugs, then gang raped by a fallen triad leader whom she had betrayed and his henchmen. This was a lot of talk and hype about the scene, even claims of how Kate’s acting in the scene was good enough for TV Queen. In the end, the anticipated scene was only 1 second, showing an unconscious Kate and the faces of the gangsters.

Tavia Yeung in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles
Tavia was captured by three men for not giving “face” to their boss. The scene cuts to a crying Tavia next to the boss, who is laughs at having taken her virginity. He then invites the three men to rape her as well. The damage from the gang rape causes Tavia to be infertile.

Grace Wong in House of Harmony and Vengeance

Grace’s elegant dancing attracted attention from the son of a government official, who tricked her into a room and attempted to rape her. The guy held her down on the bed and tore off her clothes, revealing her cleavage, before Bobby Au-Yeung rushed in and killed the guy.

Aimee Chan in The Other Truth

Aimee was accompanied home by an Indian man, Chima. She is forced down on the sofa, screaming. They are shown arguing in their undergarments until her boyfriend enters and she cries that she has been raped. Later, it is discovered that she had actually seduced him. 

Sire Ma in Relic of an Emissary

Sire is dragged into the storage room and raped by one of the guards. In the scene, the rape was represented by the spilling of rice from the sack. She is seen afterwards in a shocked state with her bare shoulders showing.

Natalie Tong in A Fistful of Stances

Natalie is chased down in a forest by Eric Li. As she screams for help, the scene is intercut with her brothers feeling a bad omen elsewhere. Eric finally catches her in a flying leap and pins her to the ground. The scene fades out as her cries echo in the air.

Samantha will be raped by a spoiled rich guy, portrayed by former Mr. Hong Kong contestant Ronan Pak. This scene will surely be anticipated by the netizens who view Samantha as a “goddess”. 

Mandy Wong in A Change of Heart

Portraying a prostitute, Mandy will be knocked out with a chloroform pad and raped in a dark alley. Luckily, Niki Chow, a police officer, arrives on the scene to save her.

Natalie Tong in Detective Columbo

Natalie reveals that she will be raped by Pierre Ngo. She said the scene only took her one take and joked that she was the most professional rape victim at TVB.

Sire Ma in Will Power
In the series, Sire is the manager of a modelling agency and will be dating Vincent Wong. Unfortunately, Vincent will turn bad and rape her.

Myolie Wu in Rosy Business 3
There will be lots of steamy scenes for Myolie Wu who works as a spy, including passionate kissing and bed scenes. The rape scene will involve Japanese soldiers.
