Overview - Wonder Women

Miriam Yeung is a fashionable, cheerful, "multi-functional" housewife. She has a loving architect husband (Raymond Wong) and an intelligent and lively son. Her life is happy and blissful. Overview - K9 Cop

Overview - Under the Veil

Hairpin Exchange
During the Song Dynasty, the Crown Prince (Stanley Cheung) suspects that one of the ministers is plotting treason. He secretly sends a spy (male Kristal Tin) to infiltrate the Liao state and collect evidence. The spy's twin sister (female Kristal) volunteers to act as her brother's double while he is away. Although they fool everyone else, the brother's wife grows suspicious. Kristal uses various methods to resolve her predicaments. At the same time, she re-encounters her ex-lover Raymond Wong, which throws her heart into upheaval. However, Raymond has suffered from amnesia after a serious illness and has forgotten everything from the past. The Crown Prince suddenly goes missing and a spirit bird (Katy Kung) delivers a message to Kristal's brother. The search for the Crown Prince is full of climactic moments. Kristal suffers a huge blow, which puts her life in danger. Raymond finally remembers everything and is heartbroken...




Justice Luk
When a flood in the capital damages the Ten Kings Temple, the scholar Wayne Lai does everything he can to save the statute of Justice Luk (Willie Wai), thereby forming a special bond with the Justice. After Wayne miraculously experiences resurrection after death, he returns home to his wife Sonija Kwok, but finds that they have nothing to say to each other. Wayne visits a brothel to drown his sorrows and meets a well-known prostitute (Sonija II), whom he instantly clicks with. Remarkably, Wayne asks the Justice to switch the heads of his wife and the prostitute. But later, Wayne finds himself missing his wife. Chasing Fish
Bosco Wong's family had fallen into financial trouble, yet the date of his arranged marriage to Eliza Sam is approaching. He travels to her home to explain the situation. Along the way, he saves a carp (Eliza II). Grateful towards her saviour, the carp secretly follows Bosco via a water route. At Eliza's house, the penniless Bosco is looked down upon and only provided with a shack to stay in. In order to get closer to Bosco, the carp transforms herself into Eliza and spends time with him at the shack. They slowly develop feelings for each other. Bosco unintentionally becomes a local hero after standing up against injustice for the villagers and Eliza suddenly shows interest in him again. Fearful that she will lose Bosco, the carp transforms herself into Eliza and causes trouble in her family. No one can differentiate between the real and fake Eliza. The carp willingly accepts heaven's test to prove her true love towards Bosco...

Review:
This series is exactly like the wealthy family that it is depicting – glamorous on the outside, but rotten on the inside. As an anniversary series, Overachievers has a grand appearance: an all-star cast, extravagant sets, glamorous clothing... okay, maybe not so nice hairstyles... but the plot was a disaster.

It's easy to understand why the Chinese title was changed from "Business Wars", because business was certainly the least of the worries in here. The first two episodes feature a seemingly intense war between father and son. But after that, it is almost forgotten and replaced with pointless drama between irrelevant characters. The Raymond-Nancy love-sickness was a drag. Power Chan and Maggie Siu, while both are entertaining, add almost nothing to the overall plot. The entire Edwin-Sisley line was neither entertaining nor necessary. After twenty episodes, you will realize you've gotten nowhere. Then in the last week or so, the plot takes a turn for the worse and we suddenly have a few wackos at our hands. Until finally, everything is wrapped up in a ridiculous ending.

The biggest problem was certainly the dramatic character changes. Elliot Ngok's character suddenly decides he's going to push away all his children with his unreasonableness and Raymond Wong's character becomes an insane serial killer. I get that these two characters drive the series to its climax, but it is really hard to watch when everything stems from such illogicialness. The character that was actually the most interesting, but ultimately wasted, was Susanna Kwan. From the way she handled her husband's infidelity, she was made to seem like a smart, calculating lady who patiently awaits her chance for revenge. Yet in the end, she proves incapable of managing the corporation or getting revenge on her son's true killer.

Wayne Lai seems to have lost his touch and now only acts as various versions of Chai Gau in his dramas. Raymond Wong has too much "force" in his acting, like the way he pushes his dialogue out or the way he grabs his female co-stars. Edwin Siu is over-exaggerative in his attempt to deliver comedy. Raymond Cho is good as the useless son, but this is not a break-through for him. Power Chan is the best of the "Five Tigers", as he always finds a way to make his characters stand out. Elliot Ngok acting is just right as the patriarch and is also convincing in the scenes after his stroke. Amazingly, Jason Chan's acting was not cringe-worthy in this series. There was only about one scene where I noticed his hands gesturing randomly. Fred Cheng is cute in his performance.

Nancy Wu is a capable actress, but she never attracts attention on the screen. In contrast, Maggie Siu can grab attention with her expressions or movements even when she is not talking. Susanna Kwan was the perfect choice for the semi-villainous step-mother. Unfortunately, her character didn't use all of her potential. Grace Chan was impressive in her debut. She is natural and at ease next to the veterans, and her crying scenes can already beat out some actresses with more experience. Sisley Choi also made a good debut, but she has a weaker screen presence compared to Grace. Ali Lee was quite noticeable too.

Rating: 3/5. Overachievers underachieved.

Screen Time Hoggers 2014

Nancy Wu



Nancy led the way with five series this year. She finally got a happy ending with familiar partner Vincent Wong in Coffee Cat Mama, but her love life was not as smooth elsewhere. In Gilded Chopsticks, she was forced into a political marriage. She was a smart businesswoman in The Ultimate Addiction and Overachievers, but cheated in love. Perhaps all the heartbreak got to her, so she decided to change her look completely and portray a villain in Tiger Cubs II.


Vincent Wong



Vincent didn't have to endure any more slaps this year. Instead, he was the "Prince of Enduring Love". He held a crush on his best friend of many years in Coffee Cat Mama. In Swipe Tap Love, he retained feelings for his former flame despite breaking up. In Tomorrow is Another Day, he showed unconditional love for a woman who helped him sixteen years ago. Vincent is equally dedicated to his job, working in the ICAC for twenty years in ICAC Investigators 2014.


Ruco Chan



Ruco seems to be compatible with anyone he works with. His charm worked twice on Aimee Chan, in Outbound Love and Ruse of Engagement, allowing them to bring home the My Favourite On-Screen Couple award from the TVB Star Awards Malaysia. His chemistry with Linda Chung in All That is Bitter is Sweet even sparked off-screen rumours. Maybe it's the soccer skills that he showed off in ICAC Investigators 2014 that attracts the ladies. Ruco's hard work was rewarded with being crowned TV King at Singapore's Starhub Awards.


Elaine Yiu



Elaine has secured the ex-wife/ex-girlfriend role. First, she broke up with Ruco Chan in Outbound Love for better career prospects. Then, she left Raymond Wong in Swipe Tap Love because of the pressure of being an adoptive mother. Even taking care of her own biological child proved too much, causing her to abandon Wayne Lai in Rear Mirror. Luckily, she finally found a loving family with Jack Wu and a son in Shades of Life.


Raymond Wong



Raymond is always dependable whether it is in big or small productions. Following Karma Rider, he renewed his fate with Priscilla Wong in Swipe Tap Love. He did double duty in All That is Bitter is Sweet, portraying two brothers with contrasting personalities. In Overachievers, he collaborated with the "Eunuch Five Tigers" again and plays the ultimate villain. He also had an appearance in ICAC Investigators 2014.


Matt Yeung



Ladies, beware if you want to date Matt Yeung. He was the "Worst Boyfriend" in Outbound Love, cheating on his fiancé with her best friend. Additionally, he set up his girlfriend for jail in Black Heart White Soul. Luckily, he redeems his image in Storm in a Cocoon by portraying a simple-minded and sweet boyfriend to Natalie Tong. Matt joined the sitcom Come Home Love as a regular cast member and also had guest star roles in Swipe Tap Love and Shades of Life. He has earned a nomination for Most Improved Actor at the TVB Anniversary Awards.

Overview - Overachievers

Wayne Lai is determined to make his own name in the business world and triumph over his father (Elliot Ngok), as a way of getting back for the many years of having to live under his tight control. Despite previous failures, Wayne is ready for another comeback with the help of Raymond Wong, Nancy Wu and Edwin Siu. They start up a mobile application company, with the intention of waging an all-out business war against Elliot. Ever since Wayne left home, his brother (Raymond Cho) has been cast aside by Elliot. His stepmother (Susanna Kwan) uses this opportunity to promote her son (Jason Chan) as the successor of the corporation and secretly works out a takeover plan. Facing repeated attacks from Susanna, Wayne fortunately receives the emotional support of his ex-girlfriend Maggie Siu and her autistic son (Fred Cheng). He also reconsiders his relationship with his father. Seeing Susanna's plot to take over Elliot's business empire, Wayne joins with his brother Raymond and step-uncle Power Chan to fight back. Overview - All That Is Bitter Is Sweet

Foshan's famous physician Du Yange has only one daughter, Linda Chung. Although she is intelligent and has a strong interest in Chinese medicine, Du Yange does not really see her as his successor because she is female. On the day of Linda's marriage to the mayor's son (Raymond Wong), a serious epidemic breaks out. Many patients, including Raymond, die after taking Du Yange's medicine, prompting the mayor (Pat Poon) to shut down the pharmacy. Experiencing such an abrupt change in her life, Linda is left feeling hopeless. At this time, Ruco Chan, a merchant suffering from a terminal illness, purchases the pharmacy's assets with the intention of reselling it for profit. To keep the pharmacy intact, Linda offers to treat his illness in exchange of him to not sell any of the assets. Through Ruco's connections, Linda meets a retired imperial physician (Choi Kwok Hing), who passes on his medical knowledge to her.

Maiden's Vow – Charmaine Sheh and Joe Ma portray successive generations of lovers. Each generation examines the prevailing attitudes and status of women during the different eras.



The Academy/E.U. – Michael Miu is a strict instructor at the Police Training School in The Academy, but is killed in the line of duty. He makes a comeback as a triad boss in the third instalment of the series, E.U.

ICAC Investigators 2014 - Preview of Cases

Case 1 - "Tomorrow"


Rookie investigator Venus Wong joins the ICAC with aspirations to fight the big tigers. But instead, she is assigned to a case involving a supermarket staffer (Jo Koo) and a milk powder smuggling operation. Venus is disheartened to see ordinary citizens being forced onto a road of corruption just to provide for themselves. Fortunately, senior investigator Liu Kai-chi helps her understand that there is no difference between major or minor cases of corruption. At the same time, Venus must make a decision about her own future. To have a better tomorrow, should she stay or leave?


Case 2 - "Spider"


The Housing Department's chief engineer Lawrence Cheng takes advantage of his position to solicit bribes for government construction contracts. Like a spider building its web, he constructs a massive network of corruption. Although ICAC investigators Gardner Tse and Raymond Wong have received reports on the corruption, they cannot find evidence against the cautious suspect. Fortunately, with the support of other departments, they eventually succeed in capturing the corrupt spider in the web of justice.

Case 3 - "Money Grubber"


Alice Chan successfully goes from being penniless to joining the ranks of the upper-class. Unfortunately, her endless persuade of wealth causes her to manipulate the stock markets. Despite being investigated by the Securities Commission and ICAC investigators Joyce Tang, Shirley Yeung and Jason Chan, Alice is unrepentant and uses any means possible to evade justice. She ends up amassing more and more criminal charges.


Case 4 - "Black Ball"


A passionate and talented soccer player, Ronald Law, inadvertently gets involved with an illegal sports betting operation. He is induced to throw an upcoming match, and even persuades his teammates to participate in the match-fixing. After receiving a tip, ICAC investigators Ruco Chan, KK Cheung and Sire Ma are put on the case. Facing the temptation of money, some players choose to continue practice as usual, while others are unsure. In the end, will they fall to temptation and give up their dreams?


Case 5 - "Comrade"


During the 1990s, the ICAC marked its 20th anniversary. Just as the corruption problem within the police force was slowly being erased, a mass corruption case involving over 20 officers reappeared again. It involved officers of all ranks, including constable Hoffman Cheng and chief inspector Desmond So. In the present day, senior investigator Eddie Kwan continues investigating the case with rookie Vincent Wong. The implications in the case shock the ICAC. Fortunately, they receive full cooperation from Kenny Wong of the police force, forging a new partnership between the ICAC and police.
