Five hundred years later, an injured man (Edwin Siu) lays in the wilderness and is saved by an embroidery worker from a small village (Jessica Kan). Edwin becomes a worker at the embroidery and dye house. In his dreams, he meets an eminent monk and unravels the mystery of his own background. Edwin recalls his name and reunites with his good friend (Sammy Sum). Edwin becomes rivals with female constable Roxanne Tong. As the pair bicker, they secretly develop feelings for each other, but Jessica also expresses her feelings to Edwin. Later, the village falls into a black demon crisis. To save the common people, Edwin decides to let go of love and desire. It turns out there is karma and fate is preordained... 

Overview - Of Greed and Ants

In the 1970s, Hong Kong's economy is booming and the stock market serves as a battleground for greed. Thai-Chinese Eddie Cheung's perspective on life changed completely because of his father's misfortunes. He escapes from Thailand to Hong Kong. Learning of the stock market's power, he is determined to be the one that controls it. The upright Edwin Siu, who comes from a grassroots background, and his friends Tony Hung and Anthony Ho are young people with dreams. Unfortunately, they get bruised and battered by the storm in the stock market... Edwin lives with a mother and two daughters. The sisters, Elaine Yiu and Jeannie Chan, have polar opposite personalities, and are waiting a chance to change their lives. Eddie connects with the wealthy Ben Wong and gradually achieves his life's goals. At the same time, Tony and his friends get pulled in and their fates are rewritten.

Overview - Our Unwinding Ethos

Urban legends, seemingly true yet seemingly fantastical, connect the past and future. Folklore professor Rosina Lam encounters locals being haunted when she is researching the legend of Bride's Pool. She discovers that someone is using the legends to commit crimes. She investigates with reporter Edwin Siu and they reveal the secret past of bride-to-be Moon Lau.

Rosina's mentor has been missing for seven years; his son turns out to be Edwin. The two of them decide to finish her mentor's unfinished paper on Hong Kong's urban legends. During their research, they encounter cases that are similar to the legends. They begin to think that her mentor's disappearance is suspicious. As they investigate, Rosina and Edwin meet police officer Jonathan Cheung, whose family happens to be the main characters in the legend of the fox spirit killing an infant. Rosina is asked to investigate the incident from years ago, which ends up leading her to her mother's pawnshop! At this time, Edwin discovers that his father is still alive.

• This series tried to do too much. It started as a historical drama, became a detective series, and then turned to palace scheming, with a mixture of romance and failed comedy in between. The series had a large cast, which meant each also had their own story to add to the clutter. 

• So much time was wasted on the useless story lines that the final face-off between the Emperor (Steven Ma) and Princess Taiping (Alice Chan) turned out to be a huge letdown. The whole climax was half-baked and poorly edited to fit within a span of less than one episode. 

• The "scheming" in the series was predictable and overused. Anyone who has watched another palace series can guess what is coming next. 

• I was expecting a lot more scheming between the four bureau heads. It was a waste of the veteran actresses they lured out of retirement for this series. 

• The rhyming lines were ANNOYING. The effort to combine a serious historical drama with Can't Buy Me Love style humour was terrible. 

• The lost sister plot was a big waste of time. The final revelation about the sister's murderer was a mere footnote and irrelevant at the end.

• Have you ever seen a palace with so few people working there? Must have spent all the money on the costumes and sets. 

• Speaking of work, the duties of the palace maids apparently consist of spying on guards bathing in the river, gossiping, and romancing. There is also no regard for palace rules. Servants and maids can enter whenever they please and speak out of turn without consequence. 

• Annie Liu is the mandatory goody two-shoes character, which meant that I was automatically going to be annoyed with her, but her accent only made it worse. Why didn't they dub her lines? Annie does look gorgeous in ancient costume though. 

• Alice Chan had a great presence that was befitting of a princess and trounced all the other women. But her character seemed to have faded into the background during the second half of the series. 

• I like seeing new faces in TVB dramas, but there was no need to have Chrissie Chau play this concubine role. I was waiting for her character to turn evil, but she remained naive and dumb until the end. 

• Steven Ma's performance is all about his subtleness. Watch those subtle changes in his facial expressions. It is acting at its finest. 

• Nancy Wu and Edwin Siu both turned in solid performances, but they didn't really stand out. 

• Kenneth Ma already seems like a boring person in real life, he does not do well with a boring character like this one. The romantic line between him and Jacqueline Wong was forced and should have been cut.

• Savio Tsang deserves a mention for the excellent scene he did in jail before his execution. 

• Hands down the most cringeworthy acting was by Andrew Yuen as the imperial physician. The scene where he was found guilty and pleading for his life was comically bad. 

Rating: 3/5. No sequel please!

Overview - Birth of a Hero

To avoid being caught up in the drama of the underworld, Edwin Siu and his sister Rachel Kan operate their inn and live quietly. But Edwin, in an attempt to win back his ex-lover Roxanne Tong, participates in a competition for new heroes. Because of this, scandals in the Eastern Depot are exposed and Edwin is imprisoned by Eastern Depot official Ben Wong. To save her brother, Rachel spreads rumours that there is hidden treasure at the inn. Not only does Ben immediately release Edwin, he also sends his right-hand woman, Grace Chan, to travel with Edwin to the inn and collect intelligence. The rumour attracts many hidden heroes to emerge and try different tactics. In the process, Grace finally discovers the truth about the murder of her parents from many years ago, causing her to turn against Ben. In addition, she develops feelings for Edwin and they are determined to reform the wulin world together. It gives new vitality to a dying wulin, but the two of them fall into the revenge plot that the kind senior, John Chiang, has planned for a long time...

A General - Yuan Chonghuan

Yuan Chonghuan (袁崇煥) was a military general during the late-Ming Dynasty. He is best known for defending the Ming borders against Jurchen invasion.

As a young man, Yuan had a strong interest in military affairs. He travelled the country and frequently chatted with retired soldiers. Yuan started his career as a magistrate, but soon moved to the Ministry of War. At that time, the Ming borders were constantly being threatened by the Jurchens. On one occasion, Yuan travelled alone to the front lines to survey the situation. When he returned to the capital, he asserted that he could defend the borders if he was given the necessary resources. He was assigned to the frontier and given funds to recruit troops.

At the frontier, Yuan gained the trust of his superior and persuaded him to build a defensive line consisting of posts beyond the Great Wall. Yuan was tasked with fortifying the city of Ningyuan (寧遠). However, when a new commander took over, he changed strategies and ordered all troops to retreat to the Great Wall. Yuan refused the order and was left to defend Ningyuan with only 10,000 men. Jurchen chief Nurhaci (努爾哈赤) got news of the retreat and led an army of 130,000 soldiers to attack Ningyuan. The Jurchens laid siege on the city, but the Ming defenders fended them off with cannon fire. Yuan had reportedly spent much time studying the cannons to ensure it would fire accurately. Nurhaci suffered injuries from a cannon shot and would later die of his wounds. The Battle of Ningyuan was Nurhaci’s first and only major military loss to the Ming.

Following Yuan’s victory, he was put in charge of the forces at the frontier. As the Jurchens shifted their focus on attacking Korea, Yuan took the opportunity to rebuild the defensive line that he had envisioned. The defensive line stretched approximately 200 km, starting with the Shanhai Pass (山海關) at the Great Wall, extending to Ningyuan, and ending at Jinzhou (錦州). When Nurhaci’s successor, Hong Taiji (皇太極), led an army to invade the Ming border, he was repealed by the defense forces in Jinzhou and Ningyuan, proving the effectiveness of Yuan’s strategy.

Despite scoring a second major victory against the Jurchens, Yuan was forced into retirement by the eunuch faction, who sent criticisms of Yuan to the emperor. However, Yuan was recalled the next year by the newly-enthroned Chongzhen Emperor (崇禎帝). He was given full authority for military affairs on the frontier. Using this authority, he executed a Ming general named Mao Wenlong (毛文龍) on charges of corruption. Mao was a general that was stationed in the Korean Peninsula. His position kept the Jurchens in check because if they attempted a massive invasion of the China proper, they risked an attack by Mao on the eastern front. But Yuan likely despised Mao’s arrogant behaviour and spending, or perhaps felt threatened by him. Mao’s execution caused the Chongzhen Emperor to be dissatisfied with Yuan.

The elimination of Mao provided the Jurchens with a prime opportunity to attack. This time, instead of attacking in the northeast region where Yuan was stationed, Hong Taiji travelled through Mongolia and attacked in the west. It marked the first time the Jurchens were able to breach the Great Wall. They reached the walls of Beijing before Yuan arrived with reinforcements to drive them away. Subsequently, Hong Taiji spread rumours that he had colluded with Yuan. Already unhappy with Yuan over the execution of Mao, the Chongzhen Emperor ordered for his arrest and sentenced him to death by slow slicing.

After the death of Yuan, the Ming army was no longer able to contain the Jurchens. The Jurchens breached the Great Wall several more times, causing countless deaths and plundering the region. The Ming Dynasty was thrown into disarray and would soon fall at the hands of rebels.

Yuan was posthumously cleared of treason during the Qing Dynasty.

Three late-Ming Dynasty officials - Edwin Siu, Raymond Cho and Matthew Ho - accidentally travel forward four hundred years to modern-day Foshan. They meet Kristal Tin, who is searching for a hidden master chef. When they see a female celebrity on television who looks like the missing crown princess (Grace Wong), Kristal deceives them by saying she can arrange for them to meet her in Hong Kong. Desperate to save the princess, the three officials sign employment contracts and become waiters and a chef at Kristal's restaurant. It turns out that Kristal wants to use Matthew's superior cooking skills to save the restaurant's declining reputation. The three officials, using new names, join the restaurant and it quickly becomes famous as a "handsome men" restaurant. Other food corporations launch a money war. Luckily, Kristal is able to survive it with the help of Edwin. The two eventually develop a indescribable relationship. Meanwhile, as Raymond continues to investigate the identity of Grace, he discovers her secret and also learns about everyone's fate from history books. When the time to return to the Ming Dynasty comes, it is hard to choose...

Overview - Short End of the Stick

A regime change has brought the imperial era to an end. Three recently unemployed eunuchs - Wayne Lai, Power Chan and Raymond Cho - become commoners and must rely on themselves for survival.
